Quote from fenn68 on November 20, 2020, 12:39 pmThe “trade scenario” now just fits if a team wants to add more prospects to protect from Rule 5 than open roster slots ... and today is the the deadline for that. No real value to make that move now unless backed into a decision by the roster limit.
So if the Padres want to add 3 with 2 open slots ... may be a better return for Preller to deal player X for a prospect than lose player Y via waivers. Have to assume that player X and player Y are both “marginal” and may not make the 26 man out of ST.
=====
Might even see some of the “fringe trades” just before the non-tender deadline. Key is that a team doesn’t want to pay the arbitration decision yet some other team may see that player fill a need (OK with the cost) and does not want to risk being able to sign that player on the FA market and bid against 28 other teams. Selling team gets “something” vs. getting “nothing” and buying team get some need filled with certainty.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 20, 2020, 1:01 pmThe Padres need to trade some of our young pitching to the Angels for Brandon Marsh.
We need a Pham replacement for either this year or next and on....the Angels need pitching.
A deal involving Patiño/Morejon/Weathers/Baez/Lawson/Luchessi of some sorts.
Not trading Gore.
They may not be inclined to trade him but depending on what they do to add pitching it may be possible.
They “really” need to do something soon to lose this stigma of wasting the best player in baseball they have.
I’m a Marsh fan and would love to see him in Brown.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 20, 2020, 1:06 pmWeird.
I just went to CBS Sports to look at their roster to see who they have in the OF besides Trout and Adell and they have four outfielders listed and NOT Trout or Adell?
Odd.

Quote from Brian Connelly on November 20, 2020, 1:30 pmSo the way I interpret this ... a player could be DFA today or non-tendered on Dec 3 or DFA after Dec 3 .... the non-tender makes him an immediate FA but the DFA puts him on waivers and he could get claimed (for a few bucks) or clear and be retained in the minors. Of course some players can’t be DFA and go directly to release.
I realize we're getting absurdly geeky here... but if the (Non) Tender DEADLINE is 12/3.... can't a player be Non-Tendered before that date? If it's a deadline (where no action is TYPICALLY taken until that date), don't see why couldn't take the action earlier vs. being "forced" to do a DFA you don't really want to when you have an inevitable roster move/opening (via NT) < 2 weeks later?

Aaagh! It's the trade idea that will NOT die... I'm not as high on him as everyone else. Get the "need", but hate the concept of trading a top 100 OF prospect (Trammell), then trading more assets to acquire another one (Marsh). Obviously Marsh could be > Trammell... Grisham was so far than Luis Urias. But it could wind up the other way... risk catastophically losing the "trade" for Nola + RP's b/c now have to add additional cost to get Marsh (and subtract Trammell).
My gut core take on Marsh has been: not enough power for an everyday "1st division" corner OF, so 4th OF/platoon risk. Bat is obviously good.
But I'm getting to the point where I just want the Pads to make the trade just so we can see what happens... 🙂

I guess the Dec 3rd date is a deadline by which if a team has not tendered a contract the player becomes FA by rule. A team prior to that date just releases that player under terms of the current contract. Same effect, player is gone and the team gets nothing back.
I guess if the “tender” is a 2021 contract .... any action with the player prior to that comes under the rules of his 2020 contract ... and that comes with all the union approved transaction structure. So, can’t declare a “non-tender” early ... I guess they can tender early since it does not impact the current 2020 contract.

LOL! For sure! So for practical purposes, if Perdomo goes off roster TODAY it's technically a DFA, not a "Non Tender".
Padres have "Designated" him before tendering him a contract for 2021. In theory a team could claim him before NT deadline, Tender him, and have 2 years (arb) control of him. More likely, he goes unclaimed, but can reject being assigned "Outright" to the Minors by the Padres based upon his MLB service time (i.e. if you're Arb eligible, a team can't outright you?), and instead choose Free Agency.

Quote from fenn68 on November 20, 2020, 2:04 pmMarsh I like but not going to deal any top prospect for him ... especially SP.
Think the upside (and Padre need soon) of Gore, Patino, Morejon, Weathers, ... even Baez outstrip the upside of an unproven OF prospect. Now if the Angels would take Lucchesi ... I would throw in Strahm and a PTNL (don’t expect that to happen).
I would gamble on the Padres finding a LF (FA, trade) easier than finding for 2022 a replacement for Davies, Clevinger (if ineffective upon return), Lamet (if breaks down again ... even in 2021), and Paddack if settles as a bottom rotation arm.
=====
Side IF the new GM actually dangles Marsh out there to the league .... probably is for a veteran productive arm that would deliver in 2021 to have better odds of upending a potentially depleted Houston and Oakland. A “prospect” may not get it done.

Quote from fenn68 on November 20, 2020, 2:18 pmI guess we should know in an hour or so BUT we could have some real surprises on the roster IF Dennis Lin’s recent tweet is right.
He expects ... wait for it .. Mason Thompson is added to the 40 man after throwing 96-99 MPH out of the pen in the instructs.
Didn’t see that one coming!
