Quote from Brian Connelly on February 7, 2021, 9:10 amThe 3 unsigned Padres FA are all non-zero possibilities to return: Rosenthal, Garcia, Moreland. Depending what gets finalized on DH in NL before season starts.
Not sure if there are any salary re-sign limitations on Non-Tendered Garcia or bought out Moreland, but don't think so.
Garcia a strong possibility if there REALLY winds up being no DH in NL. 850-900K? 1 or 2 big hits off the bench in a projected dead even race with LAD could be the difference between winning division & 1 game wild card.
But Moreland seems a (lesser) possibility to come back if there is a last minute deal to add NL DH (& expand playoffs). A LH DH is essentially a 9th position player. I "get" that we have Profar + Kim/Jake. But Kim is RH, so vs a RHP, Jake might be at 2B. Profar would really be the primary option. But he would likely be in field frequenly esp for Pham... who could DH. I get that "Moreland" would be 11th in the bench pecking order, but in a long season even having him as the "backup" DH might make sense. One injury putting Jake (or Kim) or Profar in the field every day would increase the need for that "every day" LH DH. 1.5MM?
Garcia is patient & good eye, but just zero power. Not a legit option as DH. So GG & MM are either/or depending what set of rules gets used.

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 7, 2021, 4:13 pmAdams and Castillo IMO are the keys to the depth of the pen.
If they stay healthy and productive we should be fine....if not, further moves may be necessary.

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 9, 2021, 6:56 amWhat is the first day we can move Clevinger and Winengenter to the 60 day to make a couple roster spots available again?
It just seems odd to me that Turner and Rosenthal are still unsigned and wonder if it doesn't have to do with this.
Could it be we have an agreement in principal but are waiting for the spot to open up?
There just isn't any chatter about any teams being that interested it seems.
For the Dodgers it seems odd to me that they have this guy whos like an icon in LA,is available, isn't gonna cost "that much" and they would have to start a rookie at 3b.
If it's about money I would think the Bauer signing had to really upset Turner. Here's a team who already(arguably) had the best rotation in baseball but they add $40 mil in Bauer to make the rotation even better yet he's still unemployed.
There may be more to these situations but from the outside it just seems odd that neither have returned to their former teams by now.
I realize AJ may have been told to not spend any further and he also is probably OK with what we have.....but,adding to the Pen was one of the 3 needs this offseason and we haven't added to it to this point unless you count the rotation additions that made guys like Morejon/Weathers available as relievers?
We are obviously "going for it" the next few years....wouldn't signing Rosey and trying to get Guerra through waivers make more sense?
Or releasing Altavilla?

Quote from fenn68 on February 9, 2021, 7:00 amNow that Preller knows that there will be NO NL DH and a 26 man roster in 2021 (per new agreement) ... and has a full 40 man roster ... does he now make another move (or two) to fine tune the roster?
With no DH ... a greater need for PH, PR, double switches, etc. Also, with PH ... will starters be pulled earlier if a team falls behind making a need for a stronger 6th-7th inning arms?
Keep in mind that in a little over a week both Wingenter and Clevinger can be moved to the 60 day IL opening two roster slots.
Can Preller “improve” the roster over Mateo and/or O’Grady or with Profar / Kim as the first two off the bench (and versatile) do they cover the holes in Mateo / O’Grady’s games?
Is Preller “comfortable” turning over the game in the 6th-7th to an Altavilla, Williams, Guerra, Stammen, Hill?

Quote from fenn68 on February 9, 2021, 7:11 amFrom what I can tell both Turner and Rosenthal are still on the market because the “ask” have been unrealistic for any team ... a number of teams are still interested in Turner but not at his price ... at one point was asking for a 3-4 year deal (a bit old for that) plus in part probably was waiting for the NL DH to open his market. Toronto is the team to watch ... they wanted him ... have the DH option ... have the money.
I guess his “ask” may not be coming down yet ... he basically is the last closer standing and a number of teams are still looking to fill the pen so demand well above supply. I go with one of the NL EAST teams ... money is there ... tight debate among NYM, ATL, WASH with PHIL (really needing pen help) and MIA not totally out of debate.
Don’t see the Padres in on either.

Quote from BoosterSD on February 9, 2021, 7:58 amI think Preller has two more moves in store, after the two 40 man spots open. I'm thinking Shane Greene to bolster the pen, he has closed games in the past. And either Marisnik or Pillar, who is ever willing to come in an be that true CF RHH option and takes Mateo's spot on the 26 man roster.

Garcia signs a MiL deal with the DET Tigers, according to MLBTR. With Profar and Cronenworth, just no need for Garcia on this SD roster.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on February 9, 2021, 10:02 amWith there being no limitations on the number of pitchers on the 26 man roster this year I think we're probably looking at a 4 man bench. We could probably even get away with a 3 man bench if we really wanted to push it.
If they're all healthy I have Pomeranz, Pagan, Adams, Strahm, Johnson, and Castillo as locks for the bullpen.
I think Morejon is a near lock and Altavilla, Guerra, Hill, Weathers, Stammen, Baez Williams and more should all be in the mix.
Altavilla, Guerra and Stammen can't be optioned. If you take the locks plus Morejon, Altavilla, and Guerra you've got a 9 man bullpen. That would leave O'Grady and Mateo battling for 1 spot on the bench. If you wanted to keep another arm up I think you could get away with keeping just Profar, Kim and Caratini on the bench given their versatility along with Nola and Cronenworth's. CF would be the only real concern between them and I think Profar could handle it in small doses.

I read the release differently as to pitchers:
Any player is permitted to work as a pitcher in a given game — a departure from the rules the league had previously planned to put into place that prohibited position players pitching until a certain inning or six-run deficit was in place.
I interpret that as 13 pitchers are still the limit but now a position player may be use if need .... e.g. Cronenworth type. As I recall there were rules as to how a player is classified a pitcher vs. a position player and expect what you suggest is exactly what the don't want.
Would add that without the DH ... don't want to short the offense / defense of PH, PR, defense replacements, or minor injury coverage.
