He has zip left in the tank. LAA was working him at 1B/DH and really did not want him in LF. By DFA with a contract around $28MM (last year) he will clear waivers, then any team could pick him up for league minimum (LAA on the hook for the rest).
I would do a hard pass. Not sure he would want to sign with SD if he had other options ... don't recall him being that enamored with SD. Will be interesting to see if he retires or finds a taker at league minimum for a look see.

Quote from fenn68 on April 2, 2022, 12:57 pmI am getting pretty confused on the potential Hosmer deal with the latest being Hosmer to the Cubs with the METS paying $25MM to the Cubs and the Padres paying $34MM to the Cubs ... basically the Cubs getting Hosmer for free (at least in salary) ... no 5-10 no trade rights kick in after the season, so the Cubs could deal him (with no associated cost) for a prospect next year. Have to think Cubs would have to give up something to get that sweet arrangement.
Makes some sense for the Mets with Alfonso and Cano locking down 1B/DH. Basically they get Paddack and Pagan for Smith and $25MM/4 years (AAV hit of $6.25MM). The have money and need pitching ... so I guess.
Makes some sense for the Padres moving Paddack, Pagan, and Hosmer plus $34MM / 4 years (AAV hit of $8.5MM ...partially offsetting the $18.5MM currently with Hosmer). If I got that right. Opens an additional $10MM under the cap for ??? Smith for Paddack / Pagan seems balanced. Padres by now after trying to deal Hosmer for over a year had to view his contract a pure "dead money" so paying $34MM is better than paying $59MM or giving up a top prospect and still pay a chunk of Hosmer's contract.
So will assume Smith is > Hosmer ... 3 years control at a reasonable price tag and could be dealt at any point if necessary. Most of us can live without Pagan and Paddack (with only 3 control years) is just still a question mark.
The key will be what they do with that "extra" $10MM in cap space in 2022.

Quote from Notmyopic on April 2, 2022, 2:27 pmWe probably won’t win with or without him. But this is getting to complicated, I’m guessing nothing happens.

Proposed Mets-Padres deal has hit a snag, and may be off entitrely

#Mets had deliberated for several days whether to take on about $24M of Hosmer to deepen pitching staff and decided against it.

Quote from fenn68 on April 2, 2022, 6:33 pmSince players are human this constant attempt to trade Hosmer (well over a year) ... and failing to do so ... all playing out in the media ... has to be frustrating to not only Hosmer but to his teammates who really seem to like him.
One thing to have the fans clamoring for his trade (that just goes with the territory) but having the team's front office trying over and over again somewhat publicly has to be a negative for Hosmer's performance and maybe even other teammates who could be getting discontented with this treatment of a player. Add in the same deal with Myers.
Players may work for the team but their friends are the players. Fans will say they should be professional and just ignore the goings on and just play ... that will not work with most humans.

Quote from fenn68 on April 2, 2022, 8:03 pmPlayer valuation is a tricky exercise. Consider the Smith for Paddack/Pagan failed deal.
The Mets were at least willing to “consider” paying $24MM of Hosmer’s deal to make the deal. That ended up being the deal breaker. So, that at least implies that Paddack / Pagan’s value is significantly greater than Smith in the METS view and, maybe in Preller’s view.
Are we still undervaluing Paddack and/or Pagan as trade chips or are we overvaluing Smith? Either or both may be the reason a straight Smith for Paddack / Pagan does not fly although that may make sense to some of us.
Outside chance the deal in some form can be revived without Hosmer … Mets add a prospect? Padres take Pagan out of the deal? Even if Hosmer / Voit control 1B/DH … Smith still should be an upgrade in LF over Profar / Beaty.
