Agree the the A’s ask may be the hold-up for all the suitors … no real need to trade him now, so ask for more than he is worth and see if they are lucky with a desperate team. Apparently no team is desperate enough to bite.
Sort of the same game plan as PITT with Reynolds.
In both cases … if the asks were “reasonable” value … both would have been dealt by now. I guess we should include Meadows in the group who also should be of interest to a number of teams.
With only Conforto left as an offensive upgrade on the FA market … and opening day 2 weeks out … maybe some movement in the “asks” vs “offers” from teams in contention that react to what they see in ST from their internal options (and maybe the prospects being discussed).
I would guess ST has raised the Padres’ value on Gore and Abrams while lowering the value on Campusano out of the top 4. Maybe more difficult for us to evaluate is the Padres current view of the other prospects after 3+ weeks in ST. Sounds as though Merrill, in his first camp, is on the rise for example.

Per “Roster Resource” after the settlement of the arb contracts, the Padres are at $224MM (vs the $230MM threshold) for CBT.
I would guess Padres don’t want to move into the penalty zone in 2022 and set-up a problem for 2023 when, at a minimum, they have to deal with FA Myers, Musgrove, and Clevinger and maybe N.Martinez if he opts out. In 2023 it will cost more to stay in the same place. Probably a case to not trade any of the top 4 prospects and use them and their minimum contracts for 3 years to make payroll room for the more expensive signings.
Side: wonder if the “buyout” of Fowler has some impact on the payroll strategy in the short run?

We've often mentioned packaging Weathers OR Paddack in a deal....what about both, together?
Would that bring back a better return?
With A. Martinez coming, Morejon and Baez returning, and of course a rehabbed Gore, could we afford to ship BOTH out together, in hopes of getting a better quality piece?

And why have we NOT signed Zach Davies?????
One of you guys mentioned trading Snell? Again, if he helps bring in a decent bat, absolutely! After his first half last year, and not being ready for ST this year....I'm moving him and bringing in Davies.

The talent gap between Weathers / Paddack and the others is … at this point … quite large and that would be a factor if the Padres want to contend by protecting against injury to the other starters.
Remember Morejon and Baez were put on the 60 day IL a week or so ago … so will not even be eligible to be activated until mid-May (and who knows how close they will be to game ready at the ML level).
Still would entertain dealing one of them now for a bat.

Having Clev and Martinez.....along with Gore excelling, sure makes me feel better about our SP depth this year.
Last year we were counting on Paddack and Weathers and this year they will be fall back options.
MUCH better depth.

Still looking for an OF upgrade ... will take a range of talent (depending on the price) as long as the player is better than we expect in Mazara / Profar.
To that end ... Padres have pitchers ... MINN has OF ... seems something can be worked out to help both. MINN OF options include:
Buxton lock in CF
Kepler (L) .. RF .. average hitter with a wRC+ over past that is a shade over 100 with decent defense ... 2 years control plus option year ... 29 ... contract at $6.750MM.
Kiriloff (L) .. LF ... is a major prospect who had a 95 wRC+ in his debut season ... 24 .. 6 years control
Arraez (L) ... DH ... has played LF and 2B ... really good hitter / no power ... 24 ... 4 years control
Plus they have:
Larnach (L) ... RF ... prospect with 6 years control ... 89 wRC+ in limited time in 2021 ... not great power yet ... ticketed for AAA ... was a top 100 prospect before graduating (as I recall)
Martin ... OF/INF ... #58 MLB prospect (per Roster Resource) / MINN #1 .. high draft pick (by TOR) ... can really hit and ticketed for AAA
That is a lot of talent ML ready ... and since the Padres are seeking a LF they all could represent an upgrade. Buxton / Kiriloff are not in play ... but all the others may be depending on the player(s) in return and who would "gamble" on the development of Larnach and Martin.
Wonder what Paddack or Weathers would yield in a trade?

It seems to me that with this shortened spring training, most teams who intend to compete don't know the true state of their pitching, both starters and relief pitchers. From what I've read and seen in the spring games, we finally have the depth in both and even have Pomeranz and Morejon expected to be game ready before the middle of the season. Like the fact that we now seem to have 7 legitimate healthy starters ready to throw and a host of healthy RP's that were supplemented very well by free agent signees and trades both at the major league and minor league level.
For that reason, it pitching is now a strength, my preference is to go with that strength through 1 May and let the offers come to us on a quality outfielder. I'm pretty sure with the schedule we have in 7 April-1 May (6 games w/Cinn; 3 w/Pitt; 4 w/Ariz, i.e., 13 of 1st 24) that we can squeeze out at least a .500 mark even though we do play SF, Atl and LA in the remaining 11. By then we should have a very good idea of what the strengths and weaknesses of the team actually are and make the roster moves accordingly. We'll also know more about Abrams and some of the pitchers we've sent down to El Paso. So, let's not rush into the OF at all cost mode (meaning trading away our top minor league prospects) and exercise some patience so that when we get Tatis and Pomeranz back and get our pitching locked in, we can be the force that Padres ownership thinks we can be.
