Off Season Moves and discussion

Might throw in MINN as a trade partner … very good offense after their trades and signing Correa BUT not much depth in pitching. They really have gone all in on making the playoffs and rebounding from a bad 2021 … the recipe for deal prospects for ML talent.

Padres could go a couple of ways … deal for ML ready prospect or veteran Kepler (LHH OF) who is not “great” but better than Profar / Mazara in a corner OF slot.

If they went the prospect route … Larnach (LHH OF) was a Top 100 prospect going into 2021 .. struggled a bit in part-time roles but upside still. If they want to go for maybe a bigger upside prospect (although not a pro type corner OF) … Austin Martin who can flat out hit (but without much power) and could play both INF and OF (not great defense yet).

Gambling the prospect route does not impinge on the payroll and provides an OF going forward. Myers departs after the season, so if get a one and done option … all the more difficult in filling two slots.

How about Ramón Laureano from Oakland? Plus defense, solid bat, control for another few years.... Would he take as much to get as Meadows would from the Rays?

I was just thinking about him. He will not be able to start the season until he finishes his 80 game suspension for PED use. I am not sure what he got busted for, a steroid, a recreational drug, or using a prescription medicine that had something forbidden in it, and he truly didn't know because a doctor or someone didn't tell him?

So with that suspension and PED use; depending on the substance, does that change the view that other teams have of him?

Or you as a fan, does that change your view of him? I'm not sure myself.......probably need to do some research prior to making an opinion.

LAD have just DFA'd Matt Beatty, LHH that can play all four corner spots(not overly well) but he is an OBP driven type of hitter.

Beaty from the Dodgers just got DFAd. I remember him wearing us out for a series. Maybe he could be a good bench player for us and compete for LF.

Love Laureano…..anyone know how many games he has left on his suspension?

Could only lower his cost some and maybe the number of suitors.

Laureano is an interesting debate. Melvin sure knows him … so that may be the most critical factor.

As a player … RHH only 27 … 3 control years … $2.450MM … CF with strong arm … a slightly better than average hitter with some power.

On the suspension … it was for nandrolone (anabolic steroid). The “usual” commentary that he had no idea … must have been from some contaminated substance … he prides himself in taking care of his body. Melvin said he was shocked as was the team … supportive of Laureano. Now what is PR and what is known / believed is anybody’s guess.

Some other teams are looking for specifically CF … so some competition if they are not put off by the suspension for PED.

If Melvin vouches for him … I would try to add him to the team. He would help in the mid-season and in the post-Myers era.

Now as to price … clearly OAK wants prospects and delete payroll (even if it is only $2.450MM). Maybe in the Knehr / Elliott level of prospects?

I clearly would claim him off waivers.

Still only 28 … 4 years control … league minimum … no minor league options …. LHH who has average to slightly above average offense.

Now the problem is will he fall far enough for the Padres get the claim? Will the LAD trade him before the claim is approved?

In my mind (because MLBTR mentioned it as well) the biggest competition would probably be MIA. They definitely want a CFer, and with them wanting a lower payroll, maybe more aggressive than SD would/could be because of Laureano's low salary commitment.

If this is the cost why is it not done?

My guess either this is not the cost or AJ has several deals in the works still(what I believe) and this may or may not even be one.
