Quote from fenn68 on March 20, 2022, 10:19 amStory to Boston … good contract. Glad he did not choose SF.
Could this open some trade routes for the Padres? Probably not with NYY, BOS, TOR, or TB … they are loaded (although more pitching always helps). But there is a ripple effect of 4 powerhouse teams in one division playing each other will prevent big win totals for anyone as they bump each other off. With three wild card teams, the AL East even with the better teams may not get enough wins to get the wild card slots.
So, do the teams in the AL Central and AL West makes move to fortify themselves … maybe to win their Division but at least best the rest of their Divison and rack up wins … and a playoff berth?
CWS are consider the best of the Central but in 2021 they dominated a very bad Division and really did not do well vs the better clubs outside their Division. MINN, DET, CLEV, and even KC could envision improving enough to score the needed win total in what still should be a weaker Division.
Houston may be the favorite in the West but a similar logic could occur to TEX (especially after signing Seager / Sieman), LAA (with the return to Trout), and SEA (who are building a decent roster). May or may not catch Houston but can the rack up enough wins to surpass the the non-winner of the AL East.
Most need pitching … Padres could deal pitching if the return is a quality bat.

Quote from fenn68 on March 21, 2022, 6:56 amSome interesting rumors surrounding the Padres and Austin Meadows for TB. Should not they are very “inconsistent” in valuation of both Meadows and/or Padre prospects.
What may be kicking up the rumors … beyond ST in rapidly passing … is that two other teams that were “in on” Meadows have taken other actions … BOST (Story) and PHIL (Castellanos). Yet, some suggest that TB has all the leverage knowing Padres have a big need and no alternatives. Others are suggesting that TB would like to move Meadows (and his contract) for prospects and have run out of buyers giving leverage to SD.
Couple that with TB is selling the 2019 Meadows were he was a very productive vs the buyers looking at the 2020-21 Meadows who was very “average” offensively and a below average defender.
If you are in the TB camp, the return includes the likes of Weathers, plus … if you are in the Padres camp … maybe the likes of Merrill, plus (basically prospects far from ML ready .. eg in the Lange mode for Voit).
Neither side must make the deal … so IF it happens wonder the middle ground.

Even the 2021 version of Meadows, while the BA and OBP are lower than his 2019 numbers, would still be our most productive OFer. Last season he hit 27 HRs and drove in 106 RBIs. I'll take that from an OFer.
Hope they get it done.

Quote from sportwarrior on March 21, 2022, 8:32 amIs anyone else concerned and/or annoyed that, yet again, we're in a weird position with Blake Snell? The dude is the only starting pitcher who came into camp looking like he just rolled out of bed. While everyone else is on a somewhat normal ramp-up schedule, he's way behind and won't be facing live hitters for a few days and probably won't be stretched out for opening day. This dude need to get his ish together this year after failing the team and the city miserably for 3-4 months last year. This isn't a great start.

More to the moment, the viable alternatives are Mazara and Profar, so Meadows would be a significant upgrade .. and for 3 years (contract s/b in arb about $4-5MM which works). Subtle benefit is when Myers leaves after 2022 ... will only need to look for 1 OF upgrade, not 2.
Just a matter of the price. Meadows for a package of Abrams plus ... no. Meadows for a package of A ball prospects not named Hassell ... yes. So what sits in-between to make a deal?????

If Abrams continues to impress I'd really like to see him in LF to start the season

With Snell, it seems like baseball is a job rather than a passion.

Because the current Hamilton is just bad ... well past his use by date.
