For me, Conforto is a question of the contract and what the scouts saw in his 2021 that has kept out of the rumors and have him unsigned at this late date. Not as though a number of teams couldn’t use the Conforto of 2019 and prior.
If he is trying to get paid to his 2019 numbers (dollars and years), that could be the hang-up. He is only 29 so his career should be at peak … just no team is buying into that.

Side note on Conforto … apparently some thought that he wants a short term (1 year) deal to hit FA after rebuilding his value BUT at the same time he rejected the QO offer and is seeking at least $17MM for that one year.
Given his 2021 that is a tough combo for a team to buy into with all the risk sitting with the team. Conforto probably will have to give the signing team an option for 2023 (or more years) if he wants big money in 2022.
The clock it ticking … the buyers are drying up … would think Conforto will have to break but then again it only takes one team to crack for him to get what he wants. Note that reports said the Padres were interested BEFORE the lockout … don’t know what happened unless it is the demand.

The silence today is maddening. Yesterday felt like an epic disaster for the Padres, and today it doesn't even feel like anyone outside Padres twitter or this message board are even acknowledging it. I know the offseason isn't over, but it feels like the FO owes us some kind of comment after yesterday. Even if it's just some party-line BS about how plenty of options are still on the table.

Without Tatis for at least 3 months, a lot of these moves are kinda meh anyway.
Suzuki sounded great, but are we really going to shell out $100 mil for a guy who hasnt played over here yet? Was he really going to be the answer? Everyone wanted Cruz, but not sure how we allocate $15 mil for a DH.
What other moves are out there unless we are able to move Hosmer? Even if we move him, we just need another bat as well.
This is going to take some fringe moves, some luck, and a few Preller trades to even get us anywhere beyond our current outlook without Tatis. Also, expecting him to come back in 3 months, and be healthy, or even the same guy this year, is quite optimistic.

Anyone in for Correa?
Obviously A LOT of money but he might be the best player on the market this off season.
He plays SS. When Jr. returns, he stays there and young Fernando slips into the DH role. Then as we move into the dog days, Correa, Tatis, Machado rotate thru 3B, SS, DH( and hell, even 1B)
We'll worry about what happens in 2023 after we win the World Series in 2022.

I wouldn't put anything past Preller, but if we were to get creative like that I think they'd trend more toward a 1 year prove-it kind of deal with an SS, whether that be Story or Correa.

If you could get Correa to take a 1 year contract to establish his worth as more than any other shortstop in the majors, that would certainly be a coup. Don't think this will happen because we need to think long term first, but certainly his bat in the lineup would help. Let's see what happens!

Whew ... speculation on Correa (or Story) is a sign of panic and clearly a lack of impact options. Not going to happen BUT signing either one would establish the new Padre SS for years (both better defensively than Tatis) and we can renew the Tatis to the OF where the past hype suggest he could excel defensively and continue to be a super star. Neither need to prove their worth on a one year deal ... there are enough suitors.
Both will sign big deals (maybe not their demand) but elite money. Houston re-signing Correa is probable ... don't think any other team is in the hunt at his price level. Story is the one that may be in limbo ... just don't know who else is putting SS as their top priority at his presumed price tag ... and COLO does not seem to be eager to have him return (neither does he want to return) ... maybe Boston (Bogarts is a FA after the season) or MINN. Will not rule out the NYY, ANA, PHIL.
But I will bite and play along .... sign Story for $120MM/6 years ($20MM AAV) lock down a good offensive but a real plus defensive SS and move Tatis and Abrams to OF roles that have little near term internal support. Story will not sign unless it is as a SS. He is only 29 so 6 years should be fine. He is probably waiting for Correa to sign that long term $300MM deal and become the last quality SS left and jack up his payday for the other suitors.

According to David O’Brien who covers the Braves for The Athletic the Braves and the Padres are in talks with Jorge Soler.
Of course I wanted all the big names but if you go way back to during the lockout he was my first choice for DH.
I just hope we(I) aren’t being set up for more disappointment.
If it happens we just need to trade for an outfielder…..Reynolds/Meadows/Mancini…..someone we haven’t even thought of but AJ has.
Was thinking maybe with what the Dodgers have done maybe AJ has decided to hold on to the prospects (like Fenn mentioned) and punt this season for 23’ and beyond.
But,due to expanded playoffs,we don’t have to win the Division….so I highly doubt he’s throwing in the towel.
Only reason I could think of he would do this is if he’s concerned we won’t be getting Tatis back in a few months?
