Off Season Moves and discussion
Quote from fenn68 on March 17, 2022, 7:37 amFor those obsessed with dealing Hosmer … something for Preller to pursue. The thought is triggered by the Royals signing Greinke (big money for his value) and their apparent interest in Montes from OAK (will not happen given both teams want prospects).
Since KC apparently want to add a ML SP … offer Paddack (3 control years at a modest $2MM in 2022) and tie him to Hosmer ($20MM). Padres get back (and KC get rid of) Carlos Santana ($10MM and a FA after the season). Maybe some fringe piece in play.
Why for KC … for a net $12MM they get a SP and arguably a more productive bat in Hosmer for a fading Santana ticketed as a DH. Can debate the pros and cons of Hosmer opting out after 2022 or not at $13MM/year for 3 years. I think he opts out.
Why for SD … clears $12MM in 2022 to potentially use for a different add … clears an uncomfortable situation in the clubhouse … eliminates the risk of Hosmer not opting out and triggering the no-trade 10-5 rule while getting one year of a “serviceable” veteran for DH/1B. Santana still has maintained decent OBP and some power even though his BA is down. If Preller is focused on moving Hosmer … this might work

I have thought that KC would be a good place to try and trade Hosmer. Maybe a return to KC would be good for him as well.
Then what, sign Castellanos?
I think I would prefer Conforto, better OFer defensively and potentially the better bat, especially since he did put up some nice numbers in Citi Field, compared to Castellanos hitting in Coors East(CIN).

Quote from fenn68 on March 17, 2022, 8:47 amNo to signing Castellanos or Conforto ... as I said before they will be overpriced and too long a commitment for their productivity (basically the next Hosmer / Myers) plus with QO loose a draft pick. Have to be concerned that they are not getting much play from anyone at this late date given not much left on the market. Could it be that other teams are not impressed.
Santana would be a short term back fill for Hosmer (1 year / $10MM) and go for Soler who should be had on a shorter deal (1 or 2 years) at about $10MM per year.
Now if either really drop their ask and are willing to go short term .. might change my thinking. Conforto especially who many speculated would take a 1 year deal to rebuild his value. Unfortunately he still wanted to get paid in the $17-20MM range. I guess if Conforto was willing to sign a low deal in the $10MM range with a club option for 2023 at a much higher level ... cuts the risk to the Padres if he fails in 2022 but rewards the Padres for taking the risk if he succeeds. Conforto gets his chance to get paid and establish himself and still would be young enough to get paid as a FA after 2023. Might throw some incentives in the 2022 number. His recent performance just does not warren a big commitment.
Just not a fan of Casellanos and anywhere near his ask.
Buy time in 2022 and re-set at the trade deadline or next winter's FA market.

Quote from fenn68 on March 17, 2022, 8:57 amAs of now next winter there are some appealing FA ticketed to hit the FA market and maybe be better options than Castellanos or Conforto:
Benintindi (28 next winter)
Nimmo (30)
Gallo (29) ... and apparently a Preller favorite
Haniger (32)
Judge (31) ... never will get away from NYY
Mancini (31)
Bell (30) ... more 1B/DH
Turner (30) ... that is Trea Turner who "could" be an OF but mega dollars and expect him to go back to the East Coast if LAD do not re-sign him.
Simply should the Padres save some money to play in next winter's pool rather than dealing with the remaining scraps this winter?

I guess you and I have different views of Conforto. Prior to 2020, he was at All Star levels for 3 years running, hitting around .250 with an OBP around .350 and hitting around 30 HRs each season, and can play all 3 OF spots. Even 2020 was a good year for him, bumping his BA up to .322 and OBP over .400.
2021 was an injury prone year, and I agree that he should be looking for a one year proof deal, but the market is what it is this season.
I get the cost of the QO, but doesnt that move our pick down, not lose it? Still, I have always liked Conforto, especially over Nimmo.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 17, 2022, 10:21 amI just want someone that mashes left handers....I'm not sure that's Conforto.
Would prefer a less expensive Soler option....if indeed he is less expensive.
Hard to tell with these deals being signed.

Quote from Randy Manese on March 17, 2022, 10:26 amHere is a proposed deal to free up some money to sign another bat. Hosmer, Paddack and Campusano to Texas Rangers for Nathanel Lowe and Luisangel Acuna. Rangers need a SP and have nothing much in the pipeline as a legitimate catching prospect plus they have a lot of room to absorb Hosmer's salary for one year. I'd even through in Pagan, if that makes the deal go forward. Lowe will probably just as productive as Hosmer at a much lower cost and allow the pursuit of someone like Conforto or Soler.

Personally, I think we need both. Really need a real 3rd OFer and Soler as the DH.

I would do that deal if I were the Padres … Lowe is only 26 with 5 years control and has hit in the ML (better than Hosmer).
Acura would be nice … but if needed could pass on him and effectively use Paddack and Campusano to get Lowe and clear Hosmer (and his contract).
From a Texas perspective … need ML ready pitching and catching to support the money they spent to contend now and they previously had interest in Hosmer … so adding those three net could make them more competitive in 2022 than just keeping Lowe.
Makes some sense … might role some other names on both sides since Texas could use some RP and unlikely the Padres can keep all the RP candidates without minor league options. If the wanted Pagan or Johnson … lets talk.

It's just hard to tell what other teams think about taking on Hosmer and/or Myers.
They know we are desperate and they hold the power.
