Off Season Moves and discussion

Well losing out on Suzuki is a blow. $70MM/5 year ($14MM AAV). Previously losing out on Cruz ($15MM AAV). Tatis out for 3 months. With those negatives … Preller probably will spring into trade / FA action ASAP with a clear vision of the current roster needs.

In a sense given the hitters coming off the board … not spending on Suzuki and Cruz probably opens the door to a big spending signing … maybe Bryant, maybe Freeman and also reduces any effort to deal Myers / Hosmer.

Side: reports are that the Phillies are close on Schwarber.

Adds to the idea of trading for Voit (lower cost). Not sure of any upper level bats on the trade market … maybe Reynolds (PITT), Meadows (TB) … either would cost major prospects and at a lower level Kepler (MINN) for a ML SP such as Paddack.

At least we've learned that AJ always has a plan B...and C....and D.

I'm just ready for some(any) positive news.

Schwarber to Phils official.

I think I'll stay of Twitter today...Padre fans gonna be freaking out if nothing "positive" happens today.

I dont see a need for Voit, bat is not that good IMO, to be worthy of the full time DH. Unless you think him being at DH is going to keep him healthy enough to make a full season.

Reynolds would be the dream. Takes over CF, pushes Grisham to RF and Myers to LF.

I have always liked Meadows.

Kepler probably makes the best sense, although I thought I saw that MIN is in talks with OAK regarding one of either Montas or Manaea, so unless that deal falls through, would MIN really be interested in Paddack?

Schwarber reportedly signs for 4 years with an AVV just under $20MM … seems pretty step for a DH but in PHIL he may excel.

Along with Bryant and Castellanos still out there, so is Joc Pederson. His salary demands should not be too high, and has played a lot of CF. Not sure if the defense for CF is still there, but gotta be better than most still especially in the corners. His career numbers versus LHP has not been great, but seemed much more improved last season.

With Tatis out, maybe a Bryant/Pederson signing could be best for SD?

Agree Voit is not a game changer BUT have to look at the options and what the Padres have are not that great. Voit’s 2019-20 yielded a wRC+ well over 100 … better than Profar, Mazara, Alfaro. If they deal Caratini for Voit net payroll will go up less than $3MM leaving money to focus on a LF upgrade (currently looking like Mazara or Profar). That without giving up prospects.

I like Reynolds but using the Olson trade as a benchmark … both All-Stars but Reynolds is cheaper with more control) … would cost Campusano - Hassell - Knehr - and someone like Elliott. Might be OK with the Padres since Reynolds has 4 control and for 2022 is league minimum leaving money on the table to sign a big name FA as the “second” offensive add.

No idea what TB would want for Meadows … but never like dealing with TB. Guess it would be a quality SP prospect with control (e.g. Weathers type).

We will have to wait on the MINN - OAK discussions to be over and if they fail a Paddack for Kepler might fit for both teams. However, IF Martinez is not signed … Padres might not be willing to deal Paddack or Weathers.

Given the recent signings … Bryant may appealing given he can be plugged into different positions and is not tied to a QO. Probably lower cost than Freeman and I Hosmer is not moving have Hosmer and Freeman does clog thing up a bit.

Could be an interesting couple of days.

Bryant makes way too much sense.....in many ways.

Local kid...plays If and OF,hits LH pitching....available....I mean,whats the hold up?

Had a .373 OBP last year against Lefties.

Come on AJ....Get this done already!

Plus I'm gonna guess the Cubs are out on him since they signed Suzuki....but who really knows?

The Rockies are the only team I've seen rumors about and there's no way he chooses them over the Padres if the money is close.

Well,this just popped up.

Makes too much sense....I mentioned it a few days ago but hadn't seen anything about our interest....figured AJ was waiting on Suzuki.

Preller probably on the phone right now.

MLBTR estimated a 6 year deal with a $26.5MM AAV … no QO so no loss of draft pick. However, the recent signings seem to be greater than the predictions so maybe bigger AAV or a 7th year gets it done. Only 30 so not too deep into his late 30s.

Not sure if Bryant’s agent is playing the wait for Freeman game to jack up the contract to whoever loses in the Freeman game.

=====

No idea what Joc Pederson is looking for in a contract … not considered a top FA but a good player at age 30. Again, maybe a cost / years issue with any team interested in him.

=====

Preller sets a max value on any player … always has been his style … so maybe Pederson (and Bryant) are still holding out for more.
