Even if Abrams kills it in ST, doubt they would put him on the 40 man even with Tatis' injury. Abrams simply needs more minor league AB's to get into the flow of higher level pitching before he goes to the majors - you don't want to destroy his confidence by rushing him when he's not yet had 200 AB's in a minor league season and missed one of his developmental years in 2020. If he shows well, could elevate him to El Paso, although San Antonio would be a better venue to see how he would hit in the majors. Irrespective of where they assign him, can see him getting at least 250 minor league AB's (total) and seeing how he does with those before jumping him to San Diego. I'd also give him a few reps in the OF and at 2b.

With the understanding of the concern about SP injuries … if the Padres add a journeyman SP they have to remove someone from the active roster … and would only do that if the journeyman SP is perceived better than the pitcher being removed.
Think the Padres are boxed in a bit with Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, Clevinger, and Martinez (none can be optioned) as the starting 5 with Paddack, Weathers, and Gore serving as “next man up” (all could be optioned or be long men in the pen).
Side note: Duffy had arm surgery in January and will be shelved into the season.
IF the Padres get hit with injuries during ST … they may make calls but as it stand the starting 5 appear ready to go and no issues with Weathers or Gore. Just have not heard about Paddack yet.

By "depth" arm I meant a vet to stash in AAA. Duffy and Davies both feel like they could be on the verge of becoming that kind of guy.
EDIT: I forgot about Duffy's surgery. Scratch that, then.

A couple questions....is Paddack healthy and ready to go?
Cause if not he could be put on DL(IL?) if we signed another starter.
Also,whats the word on Ona?
Dude raked in 19',then Covid happened...then he got hurt last year.
Is he healthy and an option for LF/DH or no?
Is he in major league Camp?

If the NPB reports are true, then we have Suzuki. Doubt, however, that his salary is 70M annually. Probably 5 years that average out at 14M per year, with the first couple of years below that. Other details about opt outs, etc. will have to be described in detail as the contract language unfolds.

I think it's odd the reports haven't been commented on over here, especially considering how specific and complete the report was coming out of Japan.
But...
If they were true I have to assume we'd know by now.

I think there are a lot more moving parts to making the official announcement by the Padres/MLB than what a news outlet releases. Money to the Carp, length of deal, what incentives they will or will not report to the public, etc. But I've got my fingers crossed on this one, particularly because of his close ties to Darvish.

Well he (or Pomeranz) would have to be put on the 60 IL to open a 40 man roster spot now … and if Nick Martinez is ever signed and if Suzuki is signed that requires two moves off the 40 man. Tatis will go on the 60 day .. so that is one spot BUT the Padres will have to add more position players (e.g. Mazara) just to fill out the 13 on the active roster.
However, if my view is right and some players will have to get moved because of being out of options … Preller could just get ahead of the inevitable at the end of ST and just trade/DFA some now.
Managing the 26 man roster is going to be more difficult than the 40 man.

Ona is NOT one of the non-roster invitees. Good chance he is in AA to start the season given his lack of playing time over the past few years.
Frankly, his “preview” in the ML just showed a big swing and miss profile at this stage. He just is not ready.
