Off Season Moves and discussion

I'd for sure be on board with Zach Davies returning.

Is he an FA this winter? And if so, given his not so good numbers, would he be affordable?

Yes,  he is a FA this winter according to baseball-reference.com. He made $8.1M this season, his last in arbitration. So I would imagine with his poor performance again in the NL Central, that some where around $7-9M should get him.

If I was Preller I would offer him 2 years at $7M with a 3rd year option at maybe $10M with a buyout.

With his previous success here, I think Zach would accept that.....that is if no one else offers him more( totally possible in this starter poor league)

I liked Davies when he was here … more as a 162 game value but not so much in the playoffs given his style. In 2021 he had a horrible April and a horrible last couple of months but the the mid months were good (and that is what he will sell).

I guess (assuming I have other decent offers), I would sign elsewhere where I have a high probability of starting to build a resume for the next contract … he is still young enough at 29 next season. We may be concerned about the health of the Padres staff but as a pitcher would not bet on them failing.

BIG need for pitching in MLB … even with contenders … so he should have little problem finding suitors who will pay him … think LAA or MINN or ……

IF the Padres want to add some pitching depth via FA … think they have to either go BIG with a Stroman type (an pay the price) or go for a low cost reclamation project to win a job in ST. The Davies types … probably cost too much for lower rotation value with the Padres.

However, I am still in the camp of spending any extra money on hitters as the roster is currently set up.

I agree, and I think that we have enough high end options in tow for next season with Darvish, Clevenger, Musgrove, Snell that we need one or two reliable innings eaters, like Davies. Then take that savings and pursue some hitting. Or replace a Paddack with Davies, and use Paddack as part of a package to ship out Hosmer and find a really good OFer or two.

What hitters are you envisioning SD chasing this off season???

It is Preller … so expect the front office to “be discussing” and “interested in” about every FA while “asking about” every player possible via trade.

What really happens probably boils down to the payroll limit (whatever Siedler sets) and / or any monies they can save while moving Hosmer / Myers (either or both) and securing low cost backfill.

Probably a better shot at someone (no idea who) added via trade.

Have to wonder the input the new manager will have on evaluation of the potential adds … maybe from more of an on-field, clubhouse view than a stats view. Highly likely the new manager will have a different network of baseball folks to get input on players … plus his favorites.

Someone like Ron Washington has potentially better insight on NL East players and Atlanta prospects while Dusty Baker has potentially better insight on AL West (all AL) players and Houston prospects. Probably not much happening until December so a lot of time for the front office (and the new manager) discuss shaping the new roster.

Saw a little blurb on MLBTR and it mentioned that Ron Washington had an interview in which he expressed he had the ability to get SD over the hump. Another line referenced Bochy and how he would be open to come back to SD, and then finally a inference that SD might be interested in hometown boy Aaron "Frickin" Boone should the NYY jet him.

Of those three, who is your choice? Bochy, Washington, or Boone.

Wellbeing of Tatis and the SP is the establishment for accomplishment in 2022 .... In the event that solid the SP of Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, Clevinger, and Lamet have demonstrated ML upper revolution achievement (obviously they need to rehash that achievement however the ability is there). In the event that that doesn't work out ... not certain they can do that much fiddling to survive.

Looks like Padres are after Cleveland Indians assistant pitching coach as their new pitching coach.  If we can't get Balsley back, then this potentially is a good hire.  Cleveland has developed many outstanding pitchers over the past few years and hopefully this guy has been behind a lot of that development.

This is a strange order considering they are looking for a new manager.

Hey new manager, you're our guy, but you cant have the pitching coach of your choice. Welcome to not being in control of your own team.

Not saying its not a good hire, just odd timing.
