Who else who is already in the system could be that low cost OF bench piece?
I don't know much about Mitchell but if he isn't good enough to make the Pirates 26 man I'm not sure we want him?
It may not have to do with his ability, and more so as with other organizations, that they are willing to risk that no team will select him and need to protect others that have more value to the PIT organization.
Mitchell would be a gamble just to fill that 13th slot with some upside. Checked his scouting report and not considered a good defensive OF with a weak arm. Offensively, he has potential as a contact hitter but apparently sold out a bit to get more power … some think if he returns to his contact approach he could be useful (note his K% really dropped in 2021). Not particularly speedy.
PITT does have a ton of quality prospects and Mitchell was at #18 on their MLB.com ranking. So, can’t protect everyone.
As I said before, for the Padres it is a question of alternatives for that 13th spot and Mitchell is at league minimum which allows more payroll space of other adds. Plus, if they acquired him in Rule 5 … only a small fee and can send him back if he is less than hoped or that alternative shows up.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on March 10, 2022, 2:38 pmGlad baseball is finally coming back. If anyone here is interested I started a substack to occasionally share my thoughts on the team with some of my buddies. At one point in my life I was an English major with dreams of being a sportswriter. I'm trying to get in the habit of writing regularly again. So far I have written up some trade ideas, looked at some less heralded free agent possibilities, and what our roster and lineups might look like as things currently stand. Here's a link if anyone wants to take a look.

I'm excited for the madness that I think is about to kickoff.

Quote from Randy Manese on March 10, 2022, 7:50 pmFirst move is obvious, getting Nick Martinez on the roster and releasing one player- probably Norwood. From there on, it could. get pretty interesting with the CBT going up a bit. Also, could see several pitchers on the move, both starters and relief pitchers currently on the 40-man roster, while looking to land an experienced closer. Guessing that one of the catchers is on his way out, probably Caratini, but don't expect either Hosmer or Myers to be moved. Preller has had a lot of time to locate at least one solid bat to include in the line-up, likely an OF, so it will be interesting to see who he targeted. Hope they don't detract much from a rebuilding farm system, but do have some interesting prospects in the middle infield and some young pitchers who flashed promise that might be included in a deal.

As I recall the rule was after pitcher and catchers report … so I guess in a couple of days.
Not really sure who the Padres have that is an immediate candidate for the 60 day … maybe they determine that after they have some physicals and early workouts.
Sounds as though Pomeranz might be given he may not be ready for real mound work until April … don’t know where Morejon and Baez stand from their issues. Lamet should be ready to throw and Paddack’s health is just a TBD.
My guess is that the Padres only use the 60 day IL if the player is clearly out for longer. Given the roster and players without minor league options the Padres will have to DFA/release/trade some to get down to the 26 man opening day. Norwood / Guerra are likely the first two on the bubble to make room for Nick Martinez whose contract should be made official in the next day or two.

Quote from fenn68 on March 11, 2022, 3:36 amBased on what Roster Resource has … Padres for the CBT are at $216MM with the new 2022 threshold at $230MM … so just under $14MM wiggle room before crossing into the penalty phase as a 2nd consecutive year offender … and some large penalties that get even more onerous if they pass the next levels: $250 - 270 - 290MM.
Also consider that some room should be left for trade deadline adds if needed.
Have not seen the new penalty matrix but all the reports were that they are steeper than in 2021 … and as a 2nd time offender even at the first threshold may start including draft picks / international signing money.
Given the roster structure (out of option players) and the need to add bats without a lot of payroll room … think Preller needs to trade off some players (and their contracts) to make more room for adds whether via FA or via trades for players with decent contracts.
May have to deal them for little return (propsects) to clear money. Thinking like Caratini, Johnson, Lamet, Paddack, Pagan … individually not big contracts but collectively would get to about $10MM.
Note: cannot trade Nick Martinez, Suarez, or Garcia until mid-June since they were signed as FA unless they agree and (kind of vague on this part) the Padres would still be on the hook for most (or all) of the contract. An obscure rule from my memory.

Quote from 3fingersplit on March 11, 2022, 5:14 amAfter surviving a season collapse of a pitching staff that included having a nothing left in the tank Jake Arrieta pitch a whole 5 or 6 innings at most.....I still don't understand why so many of you guys insist on trading away any pitching....unless of course our pitching is SO solid we just can deal em for middle of the road players that won't move the needle or our pitching sucks SO bad that we would be lucky to get a couple dozen balls and a few bats for em.....if the pitching staff can't throw zeros does this lineup have enough to outscore everybody ?
Somebody has to toe the rubber

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 11, 2022, 5:47 amKinda surprised no moves yet but….no one wanted to be first I guess to make it look like they were scheming during the lockout.
But I expect a flurry of activity today and this weekend.

More of a practical need … can’t keep all the pitching on the 26 man roster or option everyone. Some arms need to be moved unless a injuries in ST decimate the staff.
SP (as it sets up): Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, Clevinger, and N. Martinez … that is 5 that cannot be sent to the minors.
So what do you do with Paddack, Lamet, Weathers … you can send them to the minors or the pen. Sending Paddack or Lamet to the minors is unlikely. However, the pen has the same issue.
RP (as it sets up): Suarez, Garcia, Johnson, Adams, Stammen, Guerra, Norwood cannot be optioned and unlikely they take the option route with Pagan, Hill, or Pomeranz (maybe IL for him).
Bottom line some players have to go IF you want the best 13 on the active 26 man roster and that could be leveraged into lowering payroll to in turn spend on adding a couple of hitters. If they wait until the last minute … probably loose some ability to maximize any return for those being cut.
Even at that … the optioned prospects are “blocked” … even during the season baring injuries or cutting a player.
