Off Season Moves and discussion

MLB and MLBPA has moved up the non-tender date to Nov 30.

What the Padres do might give a clue on their view of their payroll limits. Obviously excluding Musgrove … there are 5 Padres eligible for arbitration (and therefore non-tender candidates) with projection over $2MM:

Frazier ($7,2MM) … not likely given the shortage of bats and probably a viable trade chip.

Lamet ($4.6MM) … will his injury history offset his potential?

Pagan ($2.3MM) … given the current RHRP mix, not likely

Strahm ($2.1MM) … injured and only controlled through 2022

Caratini ($2.1MM) … given Nola’s injuries as a Padre and a big TBD on Campusano not likely given the shortage of catchers in MLB plus he has 2 control years.

Strahm is the most likely but not a slam dunk … unless the Padres really don’t think he will rebound from his knee injury. Based on the current rules they could tender him, sign him, but in ST cut him and pay only a fraction of the deal. When healthy a very good LHRP. Lamet and Pagan … in the real world of MLB pitching … are good value even if not mega effective (unless Lamet’s health is a bigger issue).

SF places the oft-injured ex-Padre Alex Dickerson on release waivers. IF he clears waivers (and given his injury history and a projected $3MM in ARB he should) … would be a good Padre target on a minor league contract with invite to ST.

When healthy he can hit … LHH … and if the DH is coming and the Padres without sufficient bats … he may be a very good upside gamble. DH would cover his defensive limitations (and maybe keep him healthier).

Plus a SD guy.

If you really like upside gambles at a low cost … signing (minor league deals) both Dickerson (LHH) and Frazier (RHH) COULD create a very good DH/LF offensive duo if they played to their better seasons.

I'm with you on Dickerson; don't think he's done at 31/32.  Could be a very nice low cost pick-up.

Especially if DH comes to NL, perfect fit then.

Too bad about Canha, but 2 years at $26.5M was probably way more than what the Padres' budgeted for that acquisition.

Too bad about Canha, but 2 years at $26.5M was probably way more than what the Padres' budgeted for that acquisition.

Reports are that the Mets will also sign Sterling Marte as well. 4 years at $19.5M. Outfield seems set with Canha, Marte, and Nimmo.

Could be the end of time for Conforto in NY.

Mets just added over $40MM to their 2022 payroll to an estimated$225MM … and are still looking for SP at the Scherzer level … yes Conforto is history with the NYM.

With Marte and Canha off the board … a number of teams in pursuit of quality hitters … prices just went up on the better FA … not good for the Padres looking for likely two added bats for the OF/DH.

I have to defer to the scouts whether Conforto is worth a gamble (and expect he either holds for a big deal given his history or settles for a one year to rebuild his value off a poor season in 2021). He will only be 29 next season and was very productive 2017-19 (3 years is a good track record). Not great defensively but with the DH likely that could be ignored. LHH. Downside is that he turn down the Mets QO … so signing him will cost a team their second pick in the draft and probably not something a team would do for a one year deal. If he turned down one year $18.5 QO … he is looking for big money and long term deal.

With the Mets looking for SP maybe the Padres could offer something to entice them to deal on one of their now redundant bench pieces (all three have 3 years control and in ARB #1 under current CBA) … wRC+ for the past 3 seasons:

1. J.D. Davis … RHH … INF/OF … wRC+ 130

2. Jeff McNeil … RHH … INF/OF … wRC+ 124

3. Dom Smith … LHH … 1B/OF … wRC+ 114

If the DH is in the NL … it will cover some of their defensive shortcomings … but Mets will have a need to keep one or two for that role.

Since SD is IMO woefully RHH heavy. The only one that would be of interest is Dom Smith. However, he is the one that I think NYM will hold onto, since they have the same issue, being RHH heavy, especially after yesterdays spending spree.

Padres trade Adam Frazier to the Mariners for…….

and I’ve already forgotten the two guys we got back.

Neither even in the Mariners top 30.

Seriously, this is the best offer we got?
