I'd be interested in Andrew McCutcheon.

Still has pop in the bat and would be an upgrade over all our current OF( yes, even Grisham, who I thought regressed last year) in the field.

I imagine he'd cost at least $10 million a year. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately McCutcheon’s defense has really regressed at age 35 … he is not what he was. Just for comparison in 2021:

McCutcheon: dWAR -13.6 …. 46th of 47 qualified OF; wRC+ 107 … 29th

Pham: dWAR -5.7; wRC+ 102

Basically he was a poor defensive alternative to Pham. Hopefully the Padres can find a better option for the same cost.

Time gets to everyone and looks to have caught up with McCutcheon in his mid-30s.

The knee injury really did him in IMO.

Sign Starling Marte or trade for Ketel Marte.

Sign Stroman.

Add a Closer.

Off season complete.

So OK with spending an additional $50MM and becoming the highest payroll in MLB? Basically become the club we have all hated for decades. Then raise ticket, concession prices. Then in the end … no guarantee to win it all.

Great to dream … but reality wakes us up.

I don't usually put unreasonable thoughts out there....but I made an exception this time.

Boredom will do that to you sometimes.

Hey...maybe we find takers for Myers and Hosmer?

BTW Ketel Marte is under contract through 2024 at $10 mil average.

I doubt Az would trade him in division but you never know.

I'd be OK with that move on it's own to be honest.

As expected:

Padres decline options on Marisnick, Kela

Melancon declines player option

Padres exercise options on Johnson and Stammen

Profar exercised his player option

Roster now sits at 38 Now we wait to see who they add to protect from Rule 5 and who they choose to DFA to make room if more than two.

While there is almost certain to be a lockout after 1 December, does anyone know if this precludes players on the 40 man from playing in international winter leagues, for example, Dominican or Australian?

What about bringing in minor leaguers not on the 40 man for instructional camps prior to spring training?  It's unfortunate that we won't be able to have Niebla work with younger arms like Morejon, Gore, Weathers, Baez and others to harness and refine the talent that we know they have.  However, if he and the new minor league pitching coordinator can work with some of the lower level injured/developing pitchers, like Efrain Contreras and Gabriel Morales, we'll have a leg up on their performances in 2022.

As a result of the last moves and estimating arbitration decisions … Roster Resource pegs the Padres’ payroll at $192MM and the Luxury Tax level at $208.8MM.

New CBA will determine if that Luxury Tax level is an issue for the Padres or not … but MIGHT until then it may temper any big dollar signings OR … due to the schedule of events … lead to non-tenders of more pricy (buy risky) current roster players … maybe a trade out for a cheaper option or prospect.

Strahm? Lamet? Frazier?

The way I interpret this (and easily could be wrong) is that since the minor league players are not part of the MLBPA it could be “business as usual” regarding their development. However, minor league players that are on the 40 man (e.g. Lawson) cannot participate. A bit fuzzy on former ML players not on a 40 man but I suspect they are still part of the MLBPA and also would not be participating.

As for winter ball … not sure the Padres have any of their 40 man participating but a good question on where the MLB control ends in such a situation.

=====

Probably not a real consideration but if a team believes the lockout will last into 2022 season … and they have a prospect on the bubble of protection from Rule 5 … would they not protect that player so they can work with him in ST and let him play in the minors to start 2022? Not a Gore type (who unfortunately will get protected and get any more instruction during the lockout) but more like Wilson or Rosario?

Hard to tell even if MLB will go through with the Rule 5 in December but the rosters have to be set Nov 19th.

With both knees operated on in the last 2 years, don't think we can count on Strahm even though, when healthy, he is a very good RP.  For that reason, don't think he'll be offered arbitration and he would be a FA next year anyway.

Lamet has tantalizing skills as either a starter or RP, when healthy, that would be beyond the expected arbitration numbers; besides he's one of the few players that have 4 years under arbitration so he's under control for next year also.  I'd gamble on him being offered arbitration.

Frazier, in my opinion, is the type of player who Melvin gets to rise to his potential; I'm expecting a very good year from Frazier, however, if Abrams and Hassell show strong seasons early, might be a good trading deadline piece.

My surprise subtraction may be one of the current RPs for which we have a club option - Stammen or Johnson - but only if there is a quality OF bat that we can sign and still stay under the luxury tax.  I'm not sure the Padres are that worried about exceeding the luxury tax by a little bit in the short run; it pretty much just precludes them spending in the double digit millions for a player on a multi-year contract or pursuing a player who received a qualifying offer.

It will be very interesting to see what happens between now and 19 November!  Campusano may be on the move if we can attach Hosmer to him.  He has high upside as an offensive first catcher, probably the most ready behind Rutschman and equal to Ruiz, in that respect.  A rebuilding team with no can't miss catching prospect in the system with a lot of money available may take this on.  Salary for Hosmer is only 13M after this year but it has several years to go beyond that and he could opt out, so for a rebuilding team may be worth it.  I think we'd "settle" for a high risk prospect with a lot of upside potential.

Just saw that the options on Johnson and Stammen were picked up so forget about that idea!
