The 9th inning was a disaster. Gillaspie was terrible. Shildt left him in too long. Should have brought in Adam. He has not pitched in 3 days. This is the first time in two months the Padres lost back-to-back games. The Padres drop to 4.5 games behind the Dodgers an into 3rd place.

The offense had opportunities but could  it get it done. The pitching allowed 17 hits, which is way too many and not acceptable. However, Hoeing looked and was good as usual.

McCoy looked good offensively and defensively.

The Pads have got to win tomorrow. Musgrove on the mound.

GO PADRES!

Goodbye Gillaspie.  Hopefully Wandy will be back soon!  Need a good start from Big Smoke Friday night.  Go Pads!

I'm starting to dislike some of the swings Arraez takes, I know his focus is to put the ball in play, but he is swinging at everything, therefore he has 3 BBs since June 30th, I don't think that is what you want from your lead off hitter to be honest.

Not sure the long term future for Azzaez in SD … controlled in 2025 via ARB but FA in 2026 and since he is already around $10MM … should be demanding money that maybe exceeded his value.

On one hand he has the #2 BA (.302) in the NL … says something about hitting in 2024 and #22 in OBP (.336) … not sure how many leadoff hitters are doing better this year. However, his wRC+ is basically “average” at 102 and sits him #44 of qualified hitters. He does have one of the best BA with runners in scoring position, so that is a positive.

So the question is do the Padres have anyone who is not a regular now who can do better? In the future can they find someone better (and cheaper) or maybe lesser but cheaper in favor of signing some of the other FA to be? Yes, money, alternatives, and other FA will be part of the debate.

For me he is not meeting my expectations (not sure how much of that is how offenses are in 2024) … but don’t see a clearly better alternative in hand … and his production is not “bad” … so just living with it this season.

Guessing Padres will let him walk after 2025 … contract will be too high and they will probably try to sign King and/or Cease ahead of Arraez. Outside chance they try to trade him next winter to avoid what should be a high ARB decision knowing Tats will be back for a full season to provide better offense and then spend less and resign Solano / Peralta for DH.

I kind of understand what Shildt was doing  , saving RPs for tonight with Joe going maybe 5 innings . But it goes against everything he has done this year . Shildt has played for the win tonight because tomorrows close game isn't guaranteed . Gillaspie down Jacob up ? Jacob was sent down on Aug 8th . Does that  mean today is 15 days or tomorrow ?

Think Gillespie was in because the Padres were losing late ... he did use Hoeing after Cease and had Suarez warming if they tied or went ahead in the 8th. Down two ... Gillespie was just there to hold but had to pitch to 3 hitters and by then not going to waste top arms to wary up a loss.

Darvish is back with team. I hope being returned to the 15-day IL is just a formality and will be reactivated this weekend and pitch on Monday. Having him back will be huge.

Yu Darvish was reinstated from the restricted list and returned to the 15-day injured list. The right-hander will rejoin the team in San Diego on Friday, the Padres announced. To make room on the 40-man roster for Darvish, the Padres designated infielder Matthew Batten for assignment.

No one should be expecting him to immediately jump back into the rotation. He needs time to build back up. He said the most he has thrown is 2 simulated innings. It sounds like he threw a good bullpen today. Darvish and Shildt both said they're still discussing the next steps. He could go out on a rehab assignment or stick around long enough to throw another bullpen before they send him out. Getting him back will be huge. I just wouldn't expect it until September.

Tatis took BP on the field today too. He sounds confident that he's going to start playing again soon. They could both be back in the next few weeks.

Rosters expand on Sept 1 … one pitcher / one position player … could be a target date for Darvish / Tatis.

Padres win to keep pace with the Dbacks and the Dodgers who both won tonight.

Musgrove was outstanding tonight giving his best performance of the season pitching a one hit 7 shutout innings and 9K. The BP got a much needed rest.

Every Padres start got at least one hit and McCoy's defense looked good.

This win was much needed. Now, let's take game 3 with King on the mound.

GO PADRES!

Nice way to answer back, I really think last night they had a good chance to come back in the 5th, Iglesias just made a really nice play there. Musgrove= stopper. 👍
