New York Mets at San Diego Padres: Aug 22-25

The Padres has shaken off Colorado and is coming off a series win against the tough Twins and are 4 games back the 1st place Dodgers and in a 2nd place tie with the Dbacks. Now, they host the Mets for a 4-game series and were swept by them last June in New York. This time they play them here at Petco, where the Padres have always played well against them.
This could be a playoff preview. The Mets may be out of their division race, but they still are very much into the playoff race as they are only 1.5 games from a wild card spot. Both the Mets and Padres are fighting for a playoff spot and the Mets will be tough.
The Padres have their best pitchers in this series:
Cease is coming off back-to-back rough starts, but he has a 1.72 ERA since the AS break. He had allowed 7 runs last June against the Mets. But, that was in New York. Now he will be here at Petco.
Musgrove has allowed only 1 run in two starts since returning from the IL and has a 1.96 ERA in his last 5 starts.
King has been outstanding and has a 2.45 ERA in his last 8 starts and a 1.94 ERA in 12 of his last 13 starts.
Perez was thought by many to be another Rich Hill when he was aquired. Instead, he turned out to be a surprise. He has a 2.74 ERA in 4 games since joining the Padres. Only once in those four starts had he allowed more than 2 runs. That was 3 runs against the tough Twins. He faced the Mets only once this season as a Pirate allowing only 3 runs.
Merrill has been amazing defensively and offensively. He has hit .375 avg in his last 6 games and in August, he has hit a.323 avg, .726 SLG, 4 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs, 17 RBI. Where would the Padres be if they still had Grisham instead of Merrill

Some good series taking place this weekend with the top three NL West teams playing teams contending for a WC spot (the Rays are 6.5 games back so I guess they can be considered a long shot but they’re not out of it).

Going to the game tonight and if we get a good game out of Cease plus our average of 5.7 runs per game after the All-Star break, I think we come away with the win tonight and the beginning of a series win against a very tough Mets team. Just like the Twins, these games are going to be dogfights but the Padres have a lot of fight in them even when down 10-1. If only Merrill had gotten that HR in the 1st inning instead of the 8th it would have been a much different result. Go Padres!

Both the Dodgers and Dbacks are off today. A Padres win would put then a half game closer to the Dodgers and in sole 2nd place a half game head of the Dbacks OR if the lose, they would lose a half game and drop to sole 3rd place behind the Dbacks and 4.5 games behind the Dodgers. Let's hope they win.

We got swept by the Mets back in June so the only way to win the tie breaker with them would be a four game sweep.
I'll take 3 of 4 and be happy about it

Mason McCoy starts at SS tonight. I hope he is a better defender than Wade. He got his first major league hit last night. I hope gets more tonight.

As I expected … then next Tuesday a decision on who to option to call up another SP.
Extra RP for the four games with the METS is important.

The 9th inning was a disaster. Gillaspie was terrible. Shildt left him in too long. Should have brought in Adam. He has not pitched in 3 days. This is the first time in two months the Padres lost back-to-back games. The Padres drop to 4.5 games behind the Dodgers an into 3rd place.
The offense had opportunities but could it get it done. The pitching allowed 17 hits, which is way too many and not acceptable. However, Hoeing looked and was good as usual.
McCoy looked good offensively and defensively.
The Pads have got to win tomorrow. Musgrove on the mound.
