NEW CBA

PreviousPage 8 of 9Next

This could be it (or not). The owners and union have settled on the international draft / QO and draft pick compensation debate … the most current “big issues”.

Union has the last full contract proposal on the table … apparently the next step is the owners making their counter proposal and if you believe the earlier reports that the other issues were very close (if not settled) we could see an agreement in place by the weekend.

That is of course if the owners don’t try to slip in some other surprise issue or choose to go hardball on a “close” issue.

The key for both side is that an agreement now does allow for a full 162 game schedule and takes off the table future negotiations of prorated player salaries and service time … both would make any future negotiations even more difficult.

So, Maybe? Possibly? Could be? Players in camp on Monday / Tuesday? Start of the season wold still be delayed for a 4 week ST is suspect but the idea was to lag the season one week and toss in a few 7 inning double headers.

The current report is that MLBPA has approved the latest MLB CBA proposal and just need final approval for each team’s players (should be a formality).

Players show up to ST this weekend … ST games on the 17th (ish) … season starts April 7th.

FA should start signing right after formal approval. Let the fun begin.

I would not be surprised to see a number of trades come down quickly … although teams and players could not negotiate … GM to GM discussions were fine and a good chance they have deals set and will announce them quickly so players can get to the right ST camp.

About Damn time... Let's go Pads!

Not sure what this suggests about the MLBPA leadership but in the final ratifying vote the teams voted 26 - 4 in favor while the eight player executive committee voted 8 - 0 against ratification. On the surface it seems as though the player negation team was (is) out of touch with the wishes of the players. On the other hand, maybe it is just a vote for show of defiance to the owners once they knew the CBA would be ratified and their vote was irrelevant.

Just odd.

I said this a week ago and while I didn't hit it exactly.....

"CBT....Owners at 220...players at 238 million......split the difference to a degree......227 million with a 7 million year increase for the duration of the new CBA....227,234,241,248,255 million.....owners have some wiggle room to increase payroll and players get a possible pay increase and based on projected revenue.....this is a no brainer....the owners DON"T have to spend it if they don't want to"

This is what they settled on.....

Competitive Balance Tax threshold

2022: $230 million
2023: $233 million
2024: $237 million
2025: $241 million
2026: $244 million

This is good for both sides and great for the fans

Sorry for my late arrival…I’ve been celebrating on Twitter by messing with Dodgers fans about the full 162 game season being played.

😂

'Bout DAMN time!

World Series or bust!

Just an aside for the far future. Somewhat under reported is that the schedule starting in 2023 will reduce the number of Divison game while having each team play all 29 other teams for at least one series.

The upside is really marketing MLB by allowing various cities (fan bases) seeing every star every second year. So Trout in SD … Tatis in Boston … etc. Maybe even better for SD city since it is a destination city … another team’s loyal fan base maybe travel to SD for a 3 game series when those match-up only are every second year.

One discussion … for the next CBA in 5 years … suggested this may be a pre-cursor to full realignment … maybe with two team expansion … eliminating the NL/AL and moving to potentially four eight team leagues (or eight four team Divisions). That could also and some better regional structures where teams that area close can build a rivalry … putting SD - LAA - LAD - AZ in a Division or maybe with SF - OAK - SEA - COLO in an eight team league. 32 teams set up a “convenient” 16 team bracket type playoff structure. Long way off … but

The framework for the proposed international draft is interesting.  While the Padres. have never signed the top rated prospects, they have signed some very good players even after the 2016 penalty years; they have also signed some duds, who apparently looked very good at 15-16.  Certainly, the large market teams currently have the advantage but some smaller market teams do a great job of getting to prospects very early and essentially having them "committed" before they are even out of their early teens.  It would seem the Padres theoretically would have a better shot at some of the elite prospects over time with the international draft, particularly if they put the same kind of lottery system as part of the framework, possibly going to 10-15 teams in the lottery vice just 8 and not allowing trading or selling of draft picks, which again would work to the advantage of the larger market teams.  20 rounds and at least a 17 year old eligibility age limit would make this a more balanced method for restocking team's lowest level minor leagues than currently exists.
