MLB Draft July 9-11

PreviousPage 3 of 11Next

LAA make the first “surprising” picks … at #11 takes the #25 on the rankings … and a 1B only type out of college … I guess the kid can hit and would not be surprised he ends up an under slot sign leaving more for later LAA picks.

AJ and crew always seem to draft well but fail to develop so maybe this draft is one of those that gets flip pieces with maybe one that sticks…1b, pitching or outfield…the other positions have long term contracts

Well the Padres are starting 5 SS in Tatis, Machado, Bogaerts, Kim, and Cronenworth … so if the kid can hit he will land in the line-up somewhere.

Padres select Dillon Head, hopefully he can hit better than Tate did, and rise through the system quickly.

Well it is Head … hope I am wrong on his ML potential.

Seems like the kind of player that excels through the lower minors and even into the upper minors based on speed and a decent bat … but struggles against the better pitching and velocity at the ML level.

Dillon Head. I guess this means that the Padres believe in the bat. As long as he can hit, he can be a great player. Like a CF version of CJ Abrams with a slightly lesser bat and less power.

Matt Bush. Donavan Tate. Corey Spangenburg. Travis Jankowski. Trea Turner. Fernando Tatis. CJ Abrams. Dillon Head. All tremendous athletes in the Padres system. Only 2 could hit. 2 stars and tons of wasted talent. Keep your fingers crossed.

Not super excited about Dillon Head, but one of the few things Preller has consistently shown is an eye for amateur talent. I can still trust his judgment here, I guess.

CJ Abrams can’t hit, so saying he could be great, like a guy that can’t hit, but a worse hitter with less power doesn’t bode well.

CJ Abrams had a 60 grade bat when he was drafted. So did Trea Turner. Dillon Head has a 55 grade bat. So did Fernando Tatis. If Head hits and runs like Tatis but with a lot less power? Yeah, I would be happy with that. It's just like any non-pitching prospect; all that really matters is if the bat will play at the MLB level.

A guy like Head doesn’t have to hit for power….but he does have to be able to hit singles and walk.

I love the speed guys…speed never slumps.

But,they gotta be able to get 0n base….so we’ll see.

CJ Abrams can hit but what he can't/won't do is get a walk - that's what's driving his batting average down.  You have to be more selective at the plate and a BB rate of about 4% puts a lot of pressure on the BA.  Mr. Padre19 was high on Dillon Head and I agree with him - he seems a lot more selective hitter than Abrams but hopefully he doesn't screw himself up by trying for too much power like Hassell, who seems to have lost his stroke coming out of HS.

Head completes the new "up the middle" trio of Salas, Leodalis DeVries (next year's international signee/star) and Head.  Padres have been drafting well lately and finding some diamonds in the rough in non-drafted college players.  Should be an interesting next few weeks in the minors, particularly the low minors, as Padres try to keep within the 180 maximum active player limit.
