MLB Draft July 9-11
Quote from fenn68 on June 9, 2023, 2:00 pmIt will be interesting to see how the Padres play this draft without a the second round pick (for signing Bogaerts) and a Comp Pick and a #5 for exceeding the luxury tax (I think).
This will be the lowest Pool Allocation I can recall at only $5.4MM with $3.165MM being the allocation for the 1st round pick then drops to $0.7MM for the next pick in the 3rd round.
Padres have lost a lot of flexibility of under / over slot picks to get the players they want. Almost put in the position to go over slot at #25 (if needed) to get their man and just go under slot later in the draft. Getting a major over slot in the 3rd round would have to get funded from the #1 pick money (not enough money down the draft) and the odds of the guy they want being there is low. So shaping up to an all in on #1 pick then a series of long shots with upside (e.g. TJ types or one unknown for small schools) who they can get below slot signs ... help fund #1 and maybe a slightly better #3.

If this current mock draft is correct, the Padres could end up with the top LHP in the 2024 draft AND the intl prospect with the highest upside in the 2024 intl signing period. One huge bat and one huge arm? I would be fine with skimping later in the draft to get 2 such premium prospects.

Quote from 3fingersplit on June 9, 2023, 3:08 pmWhoever they pick it would be nice to actually see somebody get developed and make it to the Padres. This organization always seems to trade away a lot of drafted players…hopefully they keep Salas, Jackson and Snelling etc….please don’t do anymore 3,4 or 5 for 1 trades

THIS! 1000%
Don't get me wrong- once a dude suits up in brown and gold ( are we gold? Or is it yellow?), I'm a fan.
But am certainly more of a fan in someone who I've invested more time in( most of that is through you guys here, so thank you!).
I'm a bigger fan of Jackson Merrill than I am of Xander Bogaerts, a bigger fan of Jairo Iriarte than Blake Snell, etc.....
Maybe loyal to the soil is not quite the right explanation ( f**king Chargers!) but certainly have an infinity for guys who were Padres from day 1.

Well with Xander/Manny and Nando locked up.. and Soto? Othani? Other.. we could have 4 or 5 position (including DH) players locked up for 10+ seasons.. of various ages.. + Jake.. leaving 4 or 3 OPEN spots for MLB position starters + 4 bench spots.. Zavala/Merrill/Pauley/Mortarella and Salas are all 1 to 3 yrs away (or longer).. Rosario/Ripken could have a future in SD (bench roles)..
Kim ? Can we even afford to keep him beyond his current deal?
Grish? Is Fernando our CF in 2024? Or do we simply keep the best RFer in the game today in Right? (Apologies to Betts and Acuna)
I would like to see Mortarella and Merrill perhaps graduate to AA SA by end of June/mid July and get a Crack at 24 Roster..or at least a call up at some point in 24..
Sort of replace Carpenter/Cruz/Dixon/Odor/Nola/Grish
With Merrill/Campusano/Mortarella/FA/Rosario/FA...
Maybe one or 2 of Carp/Odor/Grish comes back ...maybe not..
Can we still win with 2 or 3 rookies on the 13 positions in 2024 ..yes.. especially if Gary is extended for 2024-25-26 or so.. stabilizing C and being a Mentor for Campy/Salas

Quote from JasonE135 on July 9, 2023, 2:54 pmUnfortunately there doesn't seem to be any supremely talented players like James Wood who could fall to us today. Maybe Aidan Miller, but I am not as high on him as most seem to be. Honestly I would be happy to just get an average hit/plus power hitter or a solid future #2 to #4 starter in the first round. Undoubtedly the Padres biggest prospect talent pickup this year will be de Vries in the intl. signing period.
I have my eyes on Travis Sykora, Charlee Soto, Thomas White, Yohandry Morales and Aidan Miller. I am not a big fan of Dillon Head, but I guess I would be okay with him. How about you guys?

Quote from fenn68 on July 9, 2023, 4:21 pmWith the Padres drafting #25 and then in the 90s … has been hard to really focus on potential draft targets. Then throw in the loss of picks lowering the bonus pool available taking away “flexibility” in over / under slot strategies makes it even harder to figure out.
Does not look as though any of the Wood type of sliding but signed later over slot is in the cards.
They might go with the over slot at #25 and get that from under slot on the later picks looking for obscure long shots (injured, small schools, remote locales) … if the right player is there.
I would be biased for a HS hitter with a plus hit skill and only then try to maximize the secondary skills. Sort of why not really into Head who give me the feeling of a great athlete that fall short hitting and usually falls short as a player (see Taylor Trammell, et al).

Quote from 3fingersplit on July 9, 2023, 4:43 pmAJ and crew always seem to draft well but fail to develop so maybe this draft is one of those that gets flip pieces with maybe one that sticks…1b, pitching or outfield…the other positions have long term contracts

Agreed. We have drafted far too many great athletes who cannot hit in the early rounds.
