Minor League Discussion

Apparently Nick’s OK.

Watching the video it looks like he was angry it wasn’t strike 3/end of inning and just stormed off anyway.

Threw afterward in the Bullpen

Padres did a mass housecleaning in the minors today ... a LOT of players released, a LOT moved up from ACL to LE, a LOT move up from LE, FW.

Good exposure to a higher level for these guys in the last month of the season.

This kind of rubs me the wrong way. I know that he is a rehabbing player but he's still a professional baseball player. That is a terrible example for the kids.

One report was that the felt something in his elbow and that is why he just left the mound ... they gave it some "rest" in the dugout then he was fine for the bullpen. If so, we are talking about a ML pitcher on rehab that is not going to risk the near or long term future by pushing through the injury.

I guess for "image" he should have called out the manager ... but the priority was to not make the elbow worse.

Apparently he was feeling fine today and is expected to make the next rehab on schedule. Musgrove was also fine today.

Not what the video looks like.

Walks off the mound…then someone in the dugout tells him something and he gets more aggravated and keeps heading to the dugout.

If he felt anything at all in his arm there’s no way they have him throw more in the Pen.

Yeah, not a good look for Pivetta. That said, he doesn't seem to be the kind that gives a s**t about perception. Nor small talk, given that he doesn't respond well to the press.

Salas is hitting well in El Paso. In 7 games and 27 AB, he has .333 AVG, .441 OBP, .630 SLG, 1.071 OPS, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 6 BB, 3 doubles and 1 triple.

If he keeps playing well, we could see him on the Padres next season in 2027.

Very likely ... especially if there is a lockout and the season starts "later". Not being on the ML roster should allow him to play minor league games during the lockout.

His development might allow the Padres to deal one of Campusano or Fermin to fill holes over the winter (but not during the lockout). Alternatively, the could go with three catchers but really use the defensively challenged Campusano as the DH as long as he still hits.

Catchers (good or bad) are in short supply .... so might (should) get better value back that whichever catcher gets traded.

Unless my calculations are wrong, Padres Gold Team has just clinched a playoff spot in the DSL.  Season ends on 8/18 with Padres holding a 6 game lead with 5 games left to play.  Playoffs start on 8/20 and Gold Team just transferred more hitting depth to the team in anticipation of the playoffs.  Most of the year they have just bludgeoned their opponents but have been shut down at times by a good opposing pitcher.  Team has a chance to win consecutive DSL titles.  Until they traded Joniel Hernandez, thought they would be a lock for it but now need more production from other positions and better pitching to get it done.

MLB.com just dropped its new Top 30 for the Padres. Some observations:

  1. 6 of the recent draftees landed on the list at 3-5-8-20-21-22 ... that seems a bit more than normal and adding three in the top 10 even more unusual.
  2. Only 7 are above A+ .... Salas (1) and Haynes (14) in AAA .... Musgrove (7), Karpathios (19), Cunningham (25), Malitz (29), and Hawkins (30) in AA.
  3. Salas (rated 55), Schoolcraft (rated 50), and Borthwick (rated 50) are the only prospects greater than 45 ... not conclusive but also not a ringing endorsement of the prospect upsides. Actually only 3 more at 45 ... so 24 at 40 rating.

That suggests that the Padres will not be getting much help from the system for 2-4 years ... plus the system prior to the draft was pretty empty.

IF the new owners want to compete in the next few years ... will have to spend to retain some of the current better assets and use the FA market intelligently.
