Quote from Randy Manese on August 4, 2026, 9:43 amAfter struggling last year as a 17 year old in the DSL, million dollar bonus LHSP Carlos Alvarez is starting to show his potential. Had a great July with an ERA of 2.50 and a WHIP of 1.00 for the month. Has greatly improved his control, cutting his walk rate and h/9 IP substantially while maintaining a solid K rate. Hard to square up and has given up only 1 HR in over 50 IP. If he finishes the season strong, would not be surprised to see him debut stateside in the ACL in 2027 at age 19. Expect his velocity to move up as he continues to fill out his 6:04 body and gains strength and stamina.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 4, 2026, 10:44 amMusgrove and Pivetta are set to pitch for The Storm in a game that's just about to get started. Tyler Glasnow is making a rehab start on the other side. Could be a fun one to watch.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 4, 2026, 11:25 amTucker Musgrove has a k/9 IP rate of 18.00 over high a and AA this year - which is higher than even Mason Miller! unfortunately his BB/9 IP is in the 8's which points to his inconsistency and high ERA. If Niebla can work with him over the winter and get that walk rate down to around 4-5 IP this could be our best pitcher currently in the minors.

Stats will not be important .... how long do they let them go (# of pitches) and how will they feel tomorrow.
If it goes well ... apparently another rehab at a higher level after an appropriate recovery period. Add to the pitch count each rehab.

Musgrove when 39 pitches (2.2 innings). Maybe push that to 50-60 next outing.

That could be a blessing for SD, I was reading this on MLBTR Pivetta would be able to opt out after this year as well if he makes it back from the injured list before August 22. The team could otherwise void his contract or exercise a $14MM option for next season.
So it sounds like August 22nd will be a big day for Pivetta, because if I am reading this correctly he loses the ability to opt out if not healthy by the 22nd of August.

3 batters and pulled with two out ... does not look promising.
If it is the elbow again that could end his season ... think his player option turns into a club option if still on the IL in early SEPT ... and given the injury likely would be declined at $14MM.
Maybe resigned on a lower cost deal with incentives ... would free up some money for re-signing Morejon or France ... maybe even a shot at re-signing Ray or Mize.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 4, 2026, 12:51 pmPivetta injury potentially gives leverage to Padres and, as Fenn indicates, opens up several possibilities that were not available before this injury. Don't realistically think he can recover and be activated by 22 August - he's a max effort pitcher that would not be able to crank it up if he returns. It would be wise for him to shut it down to minimize further injury and work out a deal for 2027 that would allow him to rebuild his value. Best course of action would be to stick with team that got the best out of him in his career - Padres - for 2027, if healthy.

Dude pulled himself. He immediately marched off the mound after his 14th pitch and looked exasperated before entering the dugout. His body language was not good at all.

An update from Lake Elsinore.
