Padres actually have another Chinese player, but from mainland China, named Zimo Qin.  LHP Qin showed some nasty stuff at the end of the 2024 season before injuring his arm and missing all of the 2025 season.  If Su has the talent to back up his bonus it will be interesting to see which of these two pitchers advances more quickly and what their respective ceilings are.  Right now, Lynch Mob is correct, they are long shots.

Padres moved quickly to re-sign c Rodolfo Duran, inf/of Clay Dungan and ss Francisco Acuna from their El Paso roster before they could elect free agency.  Likely that all will get a spring training invite.  Duran was a clutch hitter with surprising power for EP, pretty much sharing the catching duties with Campusano.  Dungan can play all over the infield and outfield and is a LH hitter with speed - defense not as good as McCoy at ss but a better bat.  Acuna finally was healthy for most of the year and showed well in all facets of the game before tiring, but did put up good numbers at EP in limited action.  There were times he was the only offensive producer at SA.

So, what about the elephant in the room - Yonathan Perlaza?  Either he's determined to elect free agency or the Padres are going to put him on their 40 man as soon as additions to rosters are "unfrozen".  I hope the Padres give him a chance.

Most of our participants in the AFL are holding their own, i.e., doing what we expected them to do against players who are more experienced or talented than they are.  Only one who is really over his head is SP Maikel Miralles, who is getting hit hard besides not showing command.  He had an up and down season with LE but looked okay down the stretch.  Adding to his lack of performance is that he may not be built up to go as many innings as he has this year.  Still expect him to battle for a spot on the Ft. Wayne roster in 2026 despite his struggles in the AFL.

A couple more days and minor leaguers can elect free agency.  Padres already signed a couple of important free agents in c Duran and inf Dungan but still may try to get OF Yonathan Perlaza and LHP Luis Gutierrez to avoid free agency by putting them on the 40 man and/or inviting them to Spring Training.  These are the only 2 I have identified as possibly being worthy of signing but there are a bunch more who are Rule 5 eligible that are likely to be put on the 40 man, which has multiple openings now.  If I recall correctly, that decision has to be done by 18 Nov.

Carson Montgomery starting for Peoria in the game to get into the AFL championship.  Hope he does well!

Follow-up - Montgomery got the win with 2 scoreless hitless innings.  Walked 2 but struck out 4 of the 7 batters he faced.  Looks like he's all the way back from his recovery/rehab and ready to start at LE with possibly a quick promotion to Ft Wayne if all goes well in 2026.

He's baaaack!  My personal favorite, Albert Fabian, was re-signed as a minor league free agent a couple of weeks after electing free agency.  I'm probably the only person left who believes he can at least be a AAAA player, so I hope he gets the opportunity to play in El Paso and put up some big numbers.  Guy has a lot of heart and has played through many injuries so wishing him a healthy and productive year in the Padres farm system.

Here is one name to remember next year: Jeronimo Palmeros - LHP

He pitched for Padres DSL Gold Team (team that won DSL championship) as a 18 yr old (He is 6’3 175) from Veracruz, MX who currently throws low 90s and likely will throw harder once he fills out. I believe Pads actually got lucky with Palmeros because he was supposed to sign with the Dodgers in this year’s signing period but because Dodgers had to withdraw their offer because of Roki Suzuki signing, the Padres swooped in. I expect Palmeros to start in AZL then hopefully Lake Elsinore.

2 Additional names to remember for next year: RHP Jesus Aaron Castro and Middle Infielder Jose Verdugo.

Both are 18 yrs and both players Padres DSL Gold Team. Both signed from Mexico City Red Devils academy. Both put up good numbers playing for DSL Gold Team this past year. Castro is the younger brother of Manuel Castro (Pads relief pitcher in San Antonio AA team) and heard he is already hitting mid 90s. Verdugo show good strike zone skill and puts the ball in play more often than not showing  moderate power. Both likely to start AZL then hopefully Lake Elsinore.

DSL Padres Gold Team had some very interesting prospects besides those you mentioned.  Hope they show well in the Arizona Complex league in 2026.

Here is another name to keep an eye on for 2026: C Isaac Ponce.

Ponce just turned 19 earlier this year and has a good frame at 6’2 192. He put upsolid numbers and showed good power this past year with the DSL Gold Team He is a good prospect behind the plate and likely to start the year at AZL then hopefully moves up to Lake Elsinore.
