Minor League Discussion

He might still be brought up but would he be any more successful, i.e. make a difference,  than Brooks or Ornelas?  It wouldn't cost them much and if not brought up, he will surely flee in free agency after the season ends.  Limited skills as an OF but could DH - just need to clear a roster spot.  If Preller not successful in securing two bats, it could happen after the trade deadline.

Agree that IF Preller does not secure at least one (if not two) offensive upgrades by the deadline they may take a look at Perlaza.

Although I had high hopes when he was signed and during ST ... he has not hit that well in EP ... apparently a lot of swing and miss in his game but does have some SLG in his game. He seems to be in that EP "around .300 BA" club that just keeps turning into sub-.200 ML hitters: Campusano; Brooks; Lockridge; Ornelas; Joe; Gonzalez; and Johnson (until his last couple of hits) ... at this point don't expect more from Perlaza.

Having said that ... IF no upgrade via trade, might as well drop Brooks and add Perlaza and roll the dice ... not likely less productive and a glimmer of hope he is at least a .200 hitter with SLG. Deck chairs on the Titanic?

Probably academic since nearly a certainty Preller does come up with an upgrade by the deadline ... maybe only a veteran "rental" but one that would seem to be at last a .200+ hitter.

Arizona Complex League season ends on Thursday ... so I expect we see some of their players get moved to LE for the remainder of the year (about 6 weeks more of full season ball) and, in turn, cause a push up chain reaction of roster moves. Plus maybe a more spirited use of the IL / development lists for full season players (especially pitchers) hitting their work limits for the season.

I would not expect .. even if signed by next Monday ... any of the recent draft picks to end up now in LE.

Could be lively for the minors with the trade deadline take a few and ACL promotions juggling the rest.

The new MLBPipeline Top 30 for the Padres is out.

Jumping into the Top 10 are Nett (up to #3), Mendez, and Bergert. Bit surprised Baez did not move higher than #13 given his dominant season in AA. More surprised Hawkins did not even make theTop 30 given his dominant work in FW coming off TJ surgery ... sure seems a better prospect than some that did make it.

As usual not aligned with the player ranking and recognize that Preller has often said that they normally don't truly represent how the Padres view the prospects. So, as they say, for entertainment purposes only.

Saw an update on Salas that was posted last week. He was originally thought to be able to return in July after his back issue but now suggesting it may be August or SEPTEMBER (minor leagues end mid-Sept) and the Fall league may be were he gets his missing AB.

A 19 year old catcher with a back issue making him loose a season ... has to generate some long term concern. Sure full recovery is possible BUT?

Is Marcus King Jr. our future DH/backup Catcher?

Hopefully behind Salas?

Don't rule out 1B or LF ... his speed suggest he is athletic enough. If he can hit ... he will be somewhere.

King is not a strong defensive catcher, given his 7 errors, 10 PB, and a caught stealing rate of only 8.8% (9 out of 102); I know some of that is the pitchers' fault but if you've watched him for any length of time, he's probably not going to wow you with his work behind the plate.  His hitting has been very steady and I think the power will come; got a decent walk rate (11%) and relatively low K rate (17%) so he has a chance to end the season at Fort Wayne after fighting off injuries the past 3 years.

Speaking of Lake Elsinore, on my way there to watch the game on Sunday, 3 August.  There are a huge number of prospects on that team and the staff has done a terrific job developing pitchers beyond just Mayfield and Bateman.  It was a painful process to watch at the beginning of the year, but guys like Domingo, Miralles, Olmedo, Parra, Tanner Smith, Kemp and Gil have flashed prospect status and hopefully will take another leap forward in consistency before the end of the year.  We've had mixed results with our pitching prospects this year, so we need another wave to develop and hopefully show well like Mendez has done this year.

With all the minor league players traded ... we should see some player movement to refill rosters.

did note today that FW only had one bench position player (back up catcher) and a catcher playing 1B.

Padres made a slew of moves to shore up the rosters decimated by the trades and injuries ... however for now LE has only 8 position players and 2 are catchers.

Fair to expect some other moves announced today ... will be interesting to see if any are from the ACL (Padres released a bunch a few days ago) or a few of the recent draftees get their feet wet. No pitchers needed but position players yes. Probably the college types .. both INF and OF ... maybe 3 or 4.

Did hear Preller imply that Quintana (from the MILW deal) might be one.
