Minor League Discussion

PreviousPage 333 of 355Next

I would expect the Padres start moving players up early in June when they have 50+ games / 200 AB under their belts if they are over producing for their league and there is an opening at the next level ... especially the college types.

Besides Jackson ... Zach Evans is in the same category ... 22 year old college type hitting .331 but limited power, etc. One difference (and may not mean much) but Jackson (23) came from a big program (SoCal) and wast a 17th round pick. Evans came from a small NC program (Lenior-Rhyne) and was a 9th round pick. Long shot but Evans maybe be more a hidden prospect given his small school profile (not a lot of scouting).

Maybe that is when we see Figuera moved up to LE and I am eager to see CF Roberts get out of ACL and to maybe FW. Roberts is legitimately older (24?) but great speed and defense and showed some hitting at LE last year.

All long shots but if even one matures to help the Padres ... a big win from unheralded low picks.

Concur with minor league player moves (and possibly some major league moves) that could happen as early as tomorrow.  Looking for RP like Hawkins, Neighbors, Gustin and others moving up besides a few select position players; Gustin one of the few LH pitchers that has shown promise as a RP but a guy like Wolf could fit into that role more quickly if we find someway to get rid of Peralta.   I'd hate to expose Bradgley Rodriguez to the PCL but David Morgan is there and has done well as has Reiss Knehr.  Omar Cruz seems to be on and off depending upon where he pitches since he depends so much on movement of his change-up and curveball.

On or about Jun 5 Jay Groome is eligible to come off the restricted list (suspended for gambling). He still is only 26 and had been a legit prospect (who had not performed all that well). No idea how (if) he kept in shape during the suspension.

So, any idea if the Padres retain him (maybe an ACL rehab) or just let him go? As I recall he was on the 40 man when suspended ... so even if they retain him do they do so on the 40 man (with Hoeing and Waldron returning) the 40 man will be filled ... so likely he gets DFA'd unless the put Gillaspie on the 60 day IL.

Very fringe issue ... but interesting.

The Padres have placed outfielder Oscar Gonzalezon unconditional release waivers in order to allow him to pursue an opportunity in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, reports Dennis Lin of The Athletic. With Gonzalez being granted his release, San Diego is down to 37 players on its 40-man roster.

Gonzalez may not have been as productive as hoped but at least he was useful at the ML level if needed. Now in EP only really Ornelas with any potential and zip in SA.

Combine that with Heyward's struggles ... not high upside from either Lockridge / Wade in LF ... and scary defense out of Sheets in LF and Preller may be force to accelerate his pursuit of a LF upgrade to at least only a little under average ... and that will likely still come at this point with what will be perceived as an over pay.

Since it is bit early for teams to start selling off talent ... not sure Preller can do much for another month or so.

Getting more liking calling up Campusano for DH and suffer with Sheets in LF (Lockridge comes in for defense).

Figueroa, Fountain and Roberts all not in the line-up for the ACL Padres tonight - could they be on the move?  In a surprise demotion, Eguy sent down to the ACL Padres; hopefully he'll find his stroke in the desert.

Monday does seem to be movement day in the minors since the full season affiliates don't play. If they do get promoted I wonder what the ripple effects will be. Roberts could go to Fort Wayne. We could see some of the college guys with The Storm make the jump too.

AJ and Shildt seem to like sending guys to Arizona to get right. I remember Shildt saying something about how the setup out there allowed guys to get a lot more reps and a lot more looks at different types of pitching than what they can do with the full season affiliates. Hopefully Eguy can get his swing right out there.

Roberts get moved up from ACL to FW (technically for LE since was on the IL) ... started in CF and in his first two AB ... two walks and one SB. Nice.

Transaction
05/20/25 CF Ruben Salinas assigned to Lake Elsinore Storm from ACL Padres.
05/20/25 OF Kai Roberts assigned to Fort Wayne TinCaps from Lake Elsinore Storm.
05/20/25 C Kaden Hollow assigned to Fort Wayne TinCaps from Lake Elsinore Storm.
05/20/25 1B Victor Figueroa assigned to Lake Elsinore Storm from ACL Padres.
05/20/25 3B Nerwilian Cedeño assigned to San Antonio Missions from Fort Wayne TinCaps.

Bummer ... he sure seemed like he has some talent ... and a good fit for Padres ... but, alas, not to be ...

Locastro is still an option ... he wouldn't be the worst OFer in MLB, right?
