Between the draft coming up and the end of the ACL season in 2 weeks we should see a little bit of movement. I could see De Vries and a handful of others ending the year with the Tincaps while guys from the draft or desert replace them. I don't think that Salas's struggles will change anything from an aggression standpoint when it comes to our other prospects. You could make a case for letting them stick with the Storm to experience a playoff run though.

I’d love to see Devries and Salas start to play together.

I would think guys like Rosman Verdugo, Ethan Long, Jacob Campbell, Isaiah Lowe, Xavier Ruiz, and De Vries could all be candidates to move up.

From the desert I could see guys  B.Y. Choi, Addison Kopack, and Yovannki Pascual move up to Lake Elsinore.

The draft is harder to figure. Last year Dillon Head, Homer Bush, Jay Beshears, Nik McClaughry, Tyler Morgan, Sam Whiting, Eric Yost and Harry Gustin all spent time on the Lake Elsinore roster after being drafted.

Thank you Jeremy.

Johny Brito, Austin Krob and Sam Whiting all with a nice start last night.

Does anyone have any realistic preferences for our number one pick in the draft?  I haven’t been following this year.  I think we pick 25th.

I hadn't realized that AJ had gone with a high school kid in the first round in each of the last 7 years until I saw it noted in a mock I was looking at. Most of the mocks seem to have us taking another high schooler because of that. I'm personally hoping one of the second tier of college arms falls to us and we switch it up. It seems like Chase Burns and Hagen Smith are expected to go early. After that it seems like the next 3 expected to go are Trey Yesavage, Jurrangelo Cijntje and Brody Brecht with some disagreement on the order they go in. Cijntje is kind of fascinating as a switch pitcher. The consensus is that he's a lot better right handed, but he's a natural lefty and there's some belief he could develop a lot more as a lefty if given the opportunity. Brecht might have the best raw stuff in the draft. I've seen his arsenal compared to Skenes. His control has held him back. Yesavage is seen as the most major league ready and has a great last name. It seems like the last of them comes off the board in the ballpark of our pick in most mocks I've looked at. I think our position player group is mostly set going forward. I like the idea of adding a more developed arm to the system.

Preller seems to go for the high upside picks … a lot of projection … over the more “mature” players closer to their peaks or high floor types. In his view that probably translated to HS kids who have a lot of growth potential ahead of them … under the tutelage of the organization.

In this year’s draft … seems a lot of college types are projected to go early, so getting a potential impact pick at #25 out of college may be a long shot.

HS early … followed by College types seems to be their plan recently. Of course if a College type they love is there … don’t see an issue with them jumping on him.

I don’t have a problem with them taking a high upside position player … if HS, not around the ML for maybe 4 years …by then the Padres will need a support with Profar, Kim, Arraez long gone and, maybe only DeVries coming up in the system who can handle spots in the OF/INF. System probably has more upside arms than upside position players at this point.

Thank you gents.

I’ve seen LHP Kash Mayfield (HS), Cijntje and Tyson Lewis, a HS SS, linked to us.

Graham Pauley has been hitting the last few weeks.

Let's hope whatever the issue was is resolved and he will hit from here on out.

I mean....AJ needs players to trade!

🙂

Interesting that the Padres rostered Tirso Ornelas then immediately optioned him back to El Paso.  He's having a great season and is already free agency eligible so it could be he had a clause in his contract that allowed him to get his release if not on the major league roster by the All Star break.  While limited defensively,  he has a good eye at the plate and makes solid contact; this year he's getting a little more elevation in his swing to account for more extra base hits, including HRs.  Not sold on Peralta or Bryce Johnson but at least Bryce plays a good defensive OF.  When Tatis comes back, it likely will be the end for Peralta if not before.

Its possible the Padres could have 3 teams competing in the minor league post season.  Lake Elsinore already has a spot.  Ft. Wayne has the pitching and hitting, just ran into some bad luck starting the second half; I look for them to grab a playoff spot.  Surprisingly, San Antonio came out strong in the second half but has the weakest offense, relatively speaking, of the three teams.  It will be interesting to see who moves up to support SA and Ft Waynes quest as the ACL and the draft might bring a few new faces to Lake Elsinore.

I can see DeVries, Campbell, Long and Verdugo moving up from LE and being replaced by Choi, Coffman, King and a couple of the drafted  college position players.  If Robertson is healthy, I can see Bush, Vilar , Murphy and Ortiz moving to San Antonio with Jones and Vincent (older ACL players) also going to. Ft. Wayne.

You are right … unexpected move but they did have an open roster slot so no offsetting move needed until (if) Musgrove comes off the 60 day IL and/or Darvish comes off the restricted list. However, by then maybe other 60 day IL candidates (Cosgrove, WPeralta) and some lesser prospects who are rostered.

Simply could be just a move to preserve a better talent in case of injury … hard to see him added (and either Johnson or Peralta released) while the Padres are in a wild card race … just to much of a gamble with his experience / projection. If out of the race … different plan.

Bit sorry for Ornelas … could have been a FA and with a decent chance to sign with a ML team giving him a better chance of being in the ML. Now rostered, Padres have 2 more  option years to control him. If the Padres resign Profar and the rest return … not much room for Ornelas except as a rarely used bench piece … so more likely optioned.

However, in the “over thinking” mode, if over the winter they do not resign Profar (contract too big) or trade Arraez (to allow to pay Profar by eliminating Arraez’ ARB salary) … Ornelas could have a chance for LF or DH at league minimum. So a bit of insurance by having a player in hand while sorting through the 2025 alternatives. I don’t see Ornelas as future regular for the Padres but could be useful until a better option emerges … the best they have at this point with Pauley’s struggles.
