Quote from Randy Manese on June 23, 2024, 9:45 amFor those who have young Japanese RHP Roki Sasaki on your radar as a potential Padres international signee next January 15th, the news is he has some unspecified arm issues and will now miss his second consecutive start. This is somewhat unsurprising since his walk rate is up 1 per nine IP and his K rate is down about 2 per nine IP from historical averages. Still, he was averaging 6 2/3 IP per start despite a very slight tick up in H/9 IP and HR/9IP over last year. Hoping that this is nothing serious but even if it is, Padres will likely go all out to sign him in January. In fact, his situation might scare off other suitors irrespective of the seriousness (or not) of the arm injury. Only 22, so time is on his side.

WHIP Coleman Jagger Haynes 2024 4/14 4/28 5/12 5/26 6/9 6/23 7/6 FtW <0.80 0.90 1.00 1.10 1.20 1.30 1.40 1.43 1.50 1.54 1.60 1.70 1.70 >1.80 18.00 4.50 2.29 Heres my chart on Haynes WHIP from the beginning of the season to 6/23. With todays good performance, he further moves up the chart at 1.38; my rule of thumb beginning benchmark for possible major league potential is 1.30. While WHIP is not the only important statistic, Haynes improvement in FIP, K-BB%, BA against %, H/9, BB/9, K/9 and HR/9 have all dramatically improved. Closing the gap between he and Snelling as the best LHP SP prospect in the system quickly (if he remains healthy).

Quote from Randy Manese on June 28, 2024, 9:44 amBeen pitching with arm discomfort. Probably should have been put on the IL several weeks ago but Snelling still has that football attitude to play through injuries with might not be the smartest thing to do as a baseball player, particularly a pitcher. Would like to see him shut down for a few weeks until completely healthy since this arm discomfort could develop into something major. Fenn and I have posted on this subject earlier as to what a dead arm (told by Snelling to a San Antonio broadcaster in a pre-game interview) could mean and the possibilities of further injuring the arm to a point of needing surgery.

But shouldn’t the coaching staff be making the decision to shut him down?

Quote from Randy Manese on June 28, 2024, 12:55 pmLets see what happens as we flip the calendar to July. I vote to shut him down for awhile but as a fan and not someone who is there every day my vote may based on erroneous or misleading information, however, just by looking at the results and watching him pitch every game/inning this season, this is not the same guy as last year.

Quote from Randy Manese on June 29, 2024, 8:23 pmLesko pitched another very good game today, as did Baez did yesterday, but both failed to get run support. In fact, this Ft. Wayne rotation will carry them to a 2nd half pennant if the bats come around just a little bit more. This will be an exciting team to watch from July to the end of the season.

What are you observing in particular regarding Snelling? Is his FB velo down? Is his control a problem ? Command? Which precise differences are you seeing?
Thank you!
