A LH hitting Catcher with a Minor League career stat line of .325/.431/.531
Not in MLB’s top 30 Padre prospects.
He should be in AA……is he a horrible defender?
I think he's strictly a 1B/DH at this point. He caught a handful of games in the complex league back in 2022. He hasn't caught at all since. It seems like he can hit, but lower level stat lines are hard to judge.
He just turned 22 this month and was drafted out of JC … so not quire the at the level of a College player too advanced (on paper). Did tear up the ACL last season and I was surprised he was not move to LE sooner. He also was a top player in his JC league as a catcher … he could hit.
Was not considered a top prospect coming out of HS … went to JC and starred yet still was only an 18th round pick. Maybe in part he was seen as a poor defensive catcher (Padres quickly and fully moved him to 1B/DH) and possible the less than stellar scouting reports on him as a catcher just linger keeping him down the rankings until he changes minds with his bat over a longer run at higher levels. Often first impressions (opinions) are hard to change.
On the other hand, he might just have a flaw in his swing that is not obvious to us that scouts see as getting exposed at upper levels.
Considering some of the players who linger on the Top 30 based on being athletic yet are never producing … would think Sanabria should get a nod as Merrill and Kolek graduate this month. We will see what evolves the next full re-sort of rankings
If he keeps hitting (and Doersching is not in FW) … would not be surprised to see him promoted in the Jun timeframe (as were Pauley, Marsee, Martorella last year). If he hits in FW, that may be the turning point in his scouting / ranking.

Quote from fenn68 on May 6, 2024, 5:54 amWell Merrill and Kolek just graduated but no Sanabria added.
29 … B. Rodriguez … RP … FW
30 … Sandridge … RP … SA
Can’t really argue against them … they have the FB to succeed

Like Pauley, defense will dictate where he ends up. Have to see more of him to see if he can stick at 3b; may be limited to right side of INF.

I know I like when I see more BB’s than K’s

A lot of rungs (and years) before he is in consideration for the Padres … so a lot of development time. Seems his ML path may be as a utility type … hence the work at 3B (even with Manny around plus not a great arm). In the future, might see some more work in the OF (did play OF at Northwestern / Duke) to build the utility player profile.
If we project his timeline (if successful) he should be blocked almost at every option except LF/DH. If he can hit at the upper levels … maybe a trade chip like Marsee, Martorella.

Quote from fenn68 on May 8, 2024, 7:13 amNote that Pauley started in LF yesterday with EP. Clearly that is his path to the Padres’ in his future with the INF (other than SS) pretty locked for 2024-25.
At this point, don’t KNOW that Profar gets re-signed for 2025.

Dude keeps hitting the way he is, we won't be able to afford him!

Unlikely Profar keeps this pace (or even near it) but still is setting a base of a strong FA contract … and that will be a challenge for the Padres.
Never forget team money issue and the CBT being a potential limit … the fixed / unmovable contracts and how to prioritize any re-signings … after 2024 Profar, Kim, and Peralta (if he opts out) … but keep in mind on multi-year deals cross over to the FA after 2025 … Arraez, Cease, King, and Suarez (if he opts out).
Sort of why the Padres have to push for winning in 2024-25 … and set up for new blood by 2026 by nurturing the remaining prospects as replacements.
Pauley, Bashears, Sanabria, others … plus the depth of SP … need a path to be ready to backfill the at risk positions or develop as trade chips to get that backfill.
As it looks, re-signing Kim as the SS would seem the immediate priority (no near term replacement … and don’t want Bogaerts back or Merrill shifted to SS). However with some “creative” contracts and some moves of current players on the fringe but making more than minimum) could get both Profar and Kim re-signed and stay within the CBT … with some depth risk …but maybe a goal to win in 2025 before all the FA after.
Looking at the farm system … probably would focus on re-signing the position players: Kim, Profar, Arrzaez … and take the risk on the pitching prospects. Given the injury probability of pitchers and they will want long term deals (big money) …
If the Padres go that way … Pauley, Bashears, Sanabria, could be levered into decent trade chips for that additional pitching in 2026.
