Minor League Discussion

I wouldn't get too excited about Watson.  He's having a career year so far in K's and pitching efficiency (P/I) but his stuff is not remarkable - FB barely in the low 90's and his slider and change look average at their best.  Likely he will regress toward his norms, but if not may deserve a chance for the 5th starter or spot starter - Padres have a number of players on the 40 man they could DFA to make room for him.  Despite a little regression by the San Antonio starters in their lasts starts, I'd reserve a roster spot for one of them vice Watson as a possible 5th starter.

Ft Wayne Tincaps wasted another good pitching effort today just like they did yesterday with Enmanuel Pinales.  Jagger Haynes pitched his best game of the year even though he gave up 3 walks and had only 1 K but he got through 6 innings on 75 pitches (46 for strikes).  The only run he gave up was a HR.  Some usually reliable RP just didn't have it today.

While the San Antonio staff are struggling a bit to keep the ball down and away from the middle of the plate, this Midwest League staff is slowly rounding into shape.  With Baez and Lesko slowly coming around and Nett finding his footing, this could be one of the better staffs in the minors when and if all get clicking.  Got to be patient, however, as they are very young and very inexperienced.

During ST there were two relief arms blowing through hitters - Estrada from the right side and Sandridge from the left.  The problem with both is that they had high walk rates despite K rates of almost 2 per 9/innings.  Strangely enough, Estrada found better control in El Paso and hopefully will be able to hold onto a key RH role in the bullpen.  MadFriars had a good article on Sandridge, who had bb per 9 innings of over 6 for most of his career but with incredible K rates.  Sandridge is slightly below 6 now in San Antonio and will have to show over the next month or so that he can keep that walk rate that low or lower.  If he does, he has the make-up to be a dominant LH RP but at this point it is a big IF.  Bradgley Rodriguez might have been promoted too soon to Ft. Wayne and is now struggling, so it's both a physical and mental adjustment for these young pitchers in high leverage situations.

Padres' ACL roster announced along with some shuffling players to the LE roster (and IL).

Should see some "interesting" player movement as a result of the Arraez trade. SA lost Go, Martorella, and Marsee along with a player or two to the IL ... might see some coming off the IL but not sure who is a candidate to move up from LE or down form EP. Maybe a minor league FA filler add is possible. One option is Pauley to SA for 1B.

With Head off LE ... only 3 OF ... so possible position shifts ... not sure any ACL player is ready for LE.

With Head, Marsee, and Martorella being traded ... the Top 30 Pipeline prospect list open up slots 28-30 ... others just moved up. Added:

28 ... returnee Ornelas ... LHH OF in AAA now 24 ... has heated up again and producing.

29 ... Humberto Cruz ... RHP signed this January out of Mexico at age 17 ... in DSL.

30 ... Beshears ... INF in LE ... turning 22 next week ... college type so maybe a bit advance of low A but is tearing it up.

Soon we should see a couple more adds as Merrill and Kolek "graduate" off the prospect list.

Just for reference the slotting on the MIAMI Top 30:

#5 ... Head

#10 ... Marsee

#11 ... Martorella

I guess you could look at these prospects and "good" but not great given how they were placed on the SD and MIA lists ... understanding that lists have their own issues ... individual teams view prospects differently.

Sorry to lose some guys in the minors I was pulling for but honestly only Head may ever get to the majors and perform regularly - and that won't be for at least 3 years.  Pauley is the better hitter among all 3 position players traded so the fact we only also had to give up a RP who has struggled in AA to get Arraez is a real coup (especially with the money the Marlins kicked in).

Got to keep our SD SP healthy because the only arm that looks major-league ready based on recent performances is Mazur - I rate him above Vasquez.  Snelling and Bergert have had rough outings and Krob has been up and down; Lesko has a long ways to go.  No SP in El Paso that is potentially better than Waldron.  In summary, when your next best consistent SP in the minors so far has been Enmanuel Pinales at Ft. Wayne you know our top pitching prospects have struggled and need to work things out.  Here's hoping they do!  Need a lot of patience when watching those minor league games.

When are we going to start to consider Romeo Sanabria as a prospect?

A LH hitting Catcher with a Minor League career stat line of .325/.431/.531

Not in MLB’s top 30 Padre prospects.

He should be in AA……is he a horrible defender?

I think he's strictly a 1B/DH at this point. He caught a handful of games in the complex league back in 2022. He hasn't caught at all since. It seems like he can hit, but lower level stat lines are hard to judge.

Does anyone know why DeVries is not playing?  Haven't seem him for about a week - is he injured or ill?  Speaking of Lake Elsinore, although his record doesn't show it, Lowe pitched much better than it looks.  Umps squeezed him on several K's and LE defense was not that impressive - it looks like several plays should have been made that cost Lowe some runs.  Lowe is a guy I'd like to see get healthy.
