Minor League Discussion

Looks like De Vries will be in Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday when Lake Elsinore opens a 6 game series there.  He will be the youngest player in a full season league - 4 months and 10 days younger than Salas.  I don't think we'll see him have the same progression as Salas did last year and I'd like him to get a full year at this level to mature into his body.  Not expecting him to hit .300 but already he's better than middle infielders Hoffman, Jose Sanabria and Valentine; will make a fine pairing with Verdugo at 2nd base.  This infield now looks very solid with Beshears at 3b and Romeo Sanabria at 1b.  Now if they could just find some capable SPs beyond prospects Lowe and Montgomery.

It sounds like De Vries might not be coming on his own. There are reports out that JD Gonzalez is joining the Storm as well.

Moving up Gonzalez would be a real surprise. Only 18 ... did not play in ACL last year (but did play a bit in the Puerto Rican Winter League ... over matched) ... third round pick last year with upside but raw.

Must have looked good in Extended ST to warrant the move ... so optimistic. Thought King would be move up first ... unless some injury issues.

Although he is only 18, two MLB writers, Jim Callis and Sam Dykstra, picked Gonzalez to be the Padres' breakout candidate for the 2024 season.

LE has been rotating Linares and Rodriguez at the catcher position to see if either will break out and grab the majority of time behind the plate.  If Gonzalez moves up, that experiment is likely over since he would need to show if he is ready.  Padres brass still likes Linares and Rodriguez so this move of Gonzalez is surprising, if it happens today.  I would, however, not be surprised if Gonzalez comes up later in the year after sharing time in the ACL with King, Jr.

That is what I expected ... we will see.

Padres are have converted to the move talent up quickly approach.

Is Moreno a SP or a RP in LE? 19 year old signing out of Mexico (I think) in January 2023 spent most of 2023 in DSL.

Jeremy, you were right on the money - Gonzalez also coming up.  I'll be watching the game on MiLB tonight to see how DeVries settles in.  By the way, Adan Moreno is likely a SP having started 10 games in the Dominican Summer League last year; he did pitch in the ACL in 2023 and threw 3 games in relief.  He wasn't the first name to come to mind to move up from the ACL but apparently has shown well in ST.  Lake Elsinore really needs some true SP, so cross your fingers that Adan Moreno can do the job.

In the two games I've watched De Vries, the game doesn't seem too big for him.  Got two hits today and stole his 1st base; only 1 K so far and also 1 walk; very poised at the plate and not chasing.  Looks smooth in the field.  As he gets going on this 12 game round trip, likely will be above 250 when he returns to Lake Elsinore.

Gonzalez a little more raw - played DH today.  Have to see more to see if he really is ready for this level.

Is Nolan Watson (RHSP, EP) someone we should watch (consider) as a call-up if a SP is needed?

Non-roster and 27 … was a 1st round pick (KC) in 2015 but a career beset with injuries but in an unfriendly league for pitchers … this year Watson is sitting #6 best in BAA (.235) and #7 best in WHIP (1.22).

Does he have ML stuff or is this just a case of a veteran minor leaguer outclassing other AAA players?
