Minor League Discussion

PreviousPage 291 of 355Next

Been some articles recently that the Padres will be aggressive in moving prospects up the system. Seems that is a trend in all MLB not only for college types but HS and international players too.

Since I have been around a long time ... and more used to a slow minor league development ladder ... not yet fully onboard.

Now some of that actually could be the technology in recent years from HS through College and in the minors is developing the raw talent into more polished players that much faster. I can see that. I can also see that a young player is not getting paid much while going with a low end veteran who may not truly contribute either will cost more and with no future. Why "waste" the money? Certainly a lot of studies on the downward arc of players in their mid-30s.

So, should we expect some higher placements of the better prospects to start 2024 and maybe a more aggressive menu of mid-season promotions? Lesko and Salas in AA? DeVries in low A by mid-season? Mazur / Bergert in AAA at the start of (or early in) 2024?

Might also signal the 2024 presence of Pauley and Marsee with the Padres playing real roles.

The fresh fresh faces could be fun to watch ... and maybe even good.

Snelling and Lesko just look like good pitchers ...

AAA starts their season on Friday … so between the Padres setting their 26 man on Thursday and EP setting their opening day roster Thurs or Fri … we should be close to hearing quite a few players either being released, assigned to minor league camp, or placed in short term IL.

Think AA is about a week later and a second wave of culling will happen.

Pitchers seem to be the “overstock” item but not that much “excess” in position players.

Some more housekeeping:

EP releases Moises Lugo (P)

SA releases Campbell (OF)

LE releases Nedved (P)

ACL moves to the 60 day IL: Balzer (P) and Musgrove (two way player)

El Paso roster should be released soon.  Not many decisions to make on position players but  a whole slew of pitchers, mostly RPs, that have to be weeded out.  Padres optioned out a lot of those RPs, so it will be interesting to see who sticks as SPs.

Padres could surprise and put up a couple of position players from the San Antonio roster but I think they want to keep that group together as long as possible even though Merrill and Pauley already made the jump.  Don't think Pauley is coming back to SA even if he gets optioned;  Merrill looking very sound all around - game doesn't seem too big for him.

I believe this was the full list of candidates before the final cuts.  Need to get down to 28 players and the above list has 21 pitchers listed as active, so it should be posted tomorrow morning.  Padres also invited several players to ST that did not make the 40 man and are not listed in the current El Paso roster.  Further, some older guys from San Antonio might be brought up so I look for some surprises at the AAA level.

Is Reggie Lawson taking another crack at it? Or is his inclusion here just procedural somehow?

He came out of retirement to try again, however, his last assignment was in San Antonio.   My guess is that he is very much a long shot to re-start his career.  Pulling for him, but odds greatly against him.

EP announced their initial roster with 16 pitchers and 12 position players. Plus two pitchers on the "development list" ... Mosser and Hernandez. No real surprises.

Not on the roster (probably in extended ST pending the next moves): Sandridge (L); Miller (L); Cruz, O (L); Lawson; Cruz, Y; and a mild surprise ... Go.

No prospects expect Ornelas as a position player ... so Marsee, Martorella, Castanon, are apparently ticketed for SA.
