Covers a lot of ground in the OF and got off at least 1 good throw to home plate that was right on the money with a lot of velocity. Looks like he's toned down his high leg kick and seems more balanced at the plate. I look for him to have a very good year at Ft. Wayne along with a couple of other OF's who could make some noise in Homer Bush, Jr. and Tyler Robertson - maybe one of the most athletic OF's in all of the minors.
If Head develops as a CF quickly and gets that accelerated move to A+ ... an OF of Bush-Head-Zavala with Robertson in reserve would be a defensive masterpiece.
Padres will be lacking a LF prospect for then next few years ... so good to have some quality OF in the queue even if a few years off.

Padres: Homer Bush Jr., OF (No. 14)
A 70-grade runner, Bush Jr. bolted to Double-A in his first taste of pro ball. The 2023 fourth-round pick stole 22 bases in 44 games across three levels while slashing .325/.422/.439.
Question: Is Homer Bush Jr = Buddy Reed?

Quote from Randy Manese on March 14, 2024, 8:02 amWith the trade of Thorpe, Iriarte and Zavala MLB Pipeline updated the Padres; top 30 prospects by adding Carson Montgomery (RHP), Rosman Verdugo (ss/2b) and Garrett Hawkins (RHP) to the bottom of their list.
Montgomery has yet to pitch but is likely to start his minor league career in Lake Elsinore after being the Padres #11 draft pick in 2023. Was a top prospect coming out of HS but really never developed in college.
Rosman Verdugo played the whole year at LE last year as one of the youngest everyday players in the league. He had mixed results but showed good skills in stretches; he's more of a 2b man than a ss and likely will repeat LE to start the 2024 season - he will still be among the youngest players in the league having just turned 19 (younger than Dillon Head!).
Hawkins will not be playing in 2024 due to TJ surgery last August. I was impressed with him early in the season at Lake Elsinore 2 years ago but in 2023 he didn't seem like himself and subsequently had the TJ surgery. I can see him as a high leverage RP after he comes back in 2025.

Quote from Randy Manese on March 15, 2024, 10:46 amBeen waiting for Bradgley Rodriguez (2021 signee) and Braian Salazar (2022 signed) to step up and get some meaningful innings after missing all (Rodriguez) or most (Salazar) of the last 2 seasons. Happy to see that Rodriguez got into 20 games in the Venezuelan Winter League this year and hopefully he has regained enough of his control to start showing his talent. Hope I get to watch him in the Prospect Breakout games.

Dont think you will get to see the game today, looks like we are supposed to have rain most of the day today. I hope it gets rescheduled though.

Quote from Randy Manese on March 20, 2024, 10:11 am9 more days until the Chihuahuas open the season in Albuquerque. Will be interesting to see which, if any, of the high end prospects or last options from the 40 man actually get assigned there since the AAA roster has a 28 man maximum.
The plan for Go may be to get him more time to get accustomed to throwing the larger MLB baseball; he could do that just working with the coaches and therefore might not even get into an actual game. Other one inning RP's should do okay even at high altitude, but I shudder at the thought of SP's or long relief guys pitching in the Pacific Coast league.
Not too many hitters at this level to get excited about although a few OF's (Locastro, Mitchell, Mercado) had their moments in ST. I'm hoping to see my personal favorite, Ripken Reyes, make the AAA team.

Quote from fenn68 on March 20, 2024, 10:30 amAAA/AA pitching is just hard to project since I have a long list of pitchers that logically are ticketed to land above A+. No idea who may be injured at this point but hard to be enough to avoid a long list of releases.
I could see Go placed in extended ST (but stay with the club initially) and continue to work with Niebla until they think he is ready for some game work … maybe in LE initially.
Now most of us don’t want the better pitching prospects in EP and given the limited AA time by any of them … good chance we don’t unless the Padres get aggressive with Lesko and Lizarraga and move them to SP in SA. That might push up the “older” prospects in Bergert and Mazur to EP.

Quote from fenn68 on March 20, 2024, 10:35 amAs for hitters … other than Marsee and Martorella … more minor league veterans than prospects (assuming Salas is in FW). Plus most seem more AAA level than AA … so will be interesting who gets dropped back into SA. Not a lot of excess position players.
