Through the 1st 3 inning, Robby Snelling looking very good.  Whitecaps jumping on 1st pitch because they know Snelling is always around the plate and wants to get ahead of the count.  Only 28 pitches so far and only 2 hit hard balls, one backing Dunn to the RF fence.  In my opinion, he's moved up to either the 1st or 2nd SP prospect for the Padres given his stuff and poise on the mound - and he's only 19!

Ends up going 6 innings with 4 hits and 0 walks ... 9 strikeouts. I guess he seems comfortable pitching at the high A+ level. Making an early case to start 2024 in AA and an accelerated pace to the ML.

If you compare MadFriar's pre-season consensus Top 20 prospects with what actually is occurring in the 2023 season, I believe that list and the order at the top of the list changes a great deal, except for the guy on the top of the list.  Plus you have likely adds Dillon Head and Homer Bush, Jr. from the 2023 draft.

Padres developing some very solid pitching prospects in the minors outside of the obvious trio of Snelling, Lesko and Iriarte.  For the most part, I like what I've seen of Wolf, Mazur, Bergert, Lizarraga, Henry Baez, Henry Williams and the injured Isaiah Lowe; all have shown flashes of potential although a couple (Lizarraga and Baez) are still very young.  Most likely don't have a ceiling beyond the #3 slot, if that,  in a rotation but solid 4's and 5's make for good depth.

Position players are somewhat spotty but surprisingly catching depth is one of our strengths with Salas, Valenzuela, Linares, King and possibly others emerging.  Similarly, lurking behind may be 1st basemen in Martorella, Fabian, Romeo Sanabria and Montesino.  Once we sign DeVries, we'll have two premiere middle infield prospects but at present there is not much beyond Merrill (except possibly Verdugo) unless you believe Castanon and Pauley can play 2nd base and still have hopes for Nerwilian Cedeno and Yendry Rojas to play to their potential.  Sammy Zavala tops the OF and we've seen good development from college-types like Marsee and Robertson, but younger players like Suero, Beltre and Cordero along with 2023 draftees Head and Bush could make their cases in 2024.

Hope MadFriars does a post-season Top 20 - I'll give it a shot myself and certainly interested in others voicing their opinions.

Snelling has already pitched 70 innings.  If the ceiling for IP for 1st year A pitchers in their teens is in the low 90's range, could we be seeing a shutdown of Snelling after 3-4 more starts?  With about 40 more games for Ft. Wayne on the schedule, he theoretically could be making around 8 more starts and if he goes 5 IP in every start that would push him to 110. IP.  Snelling may be the exception because of his strong build,  good mechanics and efficient style but I certainly don't want to injure that arm by blowing past 100 IP at such a young age; I'd err on the side of being too cautious.  I'm sure the coaches are taking long looks at him, Lizarraga and Iriarte because of their youth.

Although not a similar situation, Jagger Haynes was just brought back to pitch at Lake Elsinore today after being on the IL, subsequently injured his hand and is now likely out for the remainder of the season.  This was his first year pitching after a series of injuries and was progressing well; I hope this is not a prolonged setback because he has flashed excellent potential.

I guess a philosophical call on how to control innings going forward balancing development and health. Do you pitch Snelling as a SP going 5-6 innings then just shut him down early OR to you just cut his workload down to maybe 3 innings per game and let him play out the season? The latter gets him conditioned to play a full minor league season from the perspective of getting up for a full slate of games but the extra need to warm up to get ready to start may take some toll on the arm beyond going longer in fewer games. Probably a pitcher specific call.

While Merrill had an 0-5 night last night, Zavala and Salas raked.  Salas with another HR - his 8th.  Zav hit his 12.

The only negative was that Salas allowed 4 SB’s, but that could also be due to the pitchers not holding the runners…

Not sure why Padres haven't already promoted Romeo Sanabria to Lake Elsinore.  Leads the ACL in RBI, SA, OPS, HR (tied), 2nd in BA, H and 2b. (tied for latter two). Has hit for the cycle and yesterday was a 2 HR day and he hasn't made an error in 30 games at 1b.  Besides, he's already 21 so we Padres fans are curious to know if something similar to this kind of production can carry over to the next level.  His current slash line is 397/458/727 and he's only striking out at a rate of just over 21%.  He can be the dominant side of a platoon with Doersching or they can move Doersching to Ft. Wayne to see if he has a future or is just a roster filler.  Padres also have Ethan Long that they should start out in the ACL, so the time is right for that Romeo Sanabria promotion.

Been scratching my head on this one too. He is producing and has all year.

Not as though a lot of blocking players in full season ball at 1B. I start with SA not really having a DH/1B who is a real prospect … why not Martorella up from FW since he is a college type and near the top of league hitters? Would open a spot for Doersching in FW … who is also an older college type to see if he has any future. Alternatively, FW has some need in the OF and, although not ideally suited,  Martorella could get reps out there for the rest of the season … especially since it appears Mears in on his last life as a prospect.

With the draft and the incumbent ACL players … a lot of bodies who should get game reps for evaluation … a lot who may not be 1B per se probably can benefit from some exposure to 1B while getting their AB. After all this is the ACL.

There should be another wave of movement soon. I think all of the draft picks and undrafted free agent signees have to be activated in the next few days.

Anyone know what is going on with these two? I guess injuries could be minor but maybe the season will end before they are ready to really play ... so a 60 day IL avoids cutting someone else to keep under the 180 limit.

Roster Moves: The Padres have officially activated third-round pick J.D. Gonzalez and seventh-rounder Tucker Musgrove, and immediately moved them to the 60-day and full-season injured lists respectively. Neither will count toward the 180-player domestic reserve list during this season.

Any chance Salas gets moved up to FW?
