Good RP are hard to come by.

Padres MIGHT have a strategy of keeping Martinez in the pen (he has been really good there) and when Lugo hits (or nears) his innings limit as a SP send him to the pen and recall Weathers to replace him as a starter. Then HOPE Suarez' IL stint ends and he is back to his peak performance.

So, COULD end up from the RHRP side: Suarez, Martinez, Lugo, Wilson, Honeywell and from the LHRP side Hader, Hill, and one of Castillo, Cosgrove, Kerr. That looks to be a good pen. SP could be Darvish, Musgrove, Snell, Wacha, and Weathers, also not bad potentially

Now would expect an injury or two to alter the landscape but that is not a bad baseline. If that mix held ... and the offense begins to deliver their promise ... that should be a playoff caliber team.

About 2 1/2 months of development in the minors to see if some other RP option clicks and vaults into the mix ... or even Morejon comes back from injury or Hamels clicks for a call-up. Most likely the options / strategy late in July will be different than today.

Heard KC is listening on Chapman

Can he hit?

Nope... but if we had Suarez (or Chapman) by my calculation we would be 23-15 right now...

One thing to consider We are 19-19 and have played the hardest schedule in baseball...

Any interest in signing Franmil Reyes to a MINOR LEAGUE contract. Reyes has been really poor over the past couple of seasons and not sure any of his coaches are still around with Padres who might get to him and elicit a rebound to his former forum.

However, on a minor league deal, in a AAA/AA system that really lacks some OF/DH upside he may be an interesting gamble. Low cost upside gamble?

Yes, I would definitely take a flier on resigning Franimal.

Watched Fort Wayne and Lake Elnisore last few days and I like Keegan Collett and Thomas Balboni Jr being tried as starters. Both are at 94-95 with promising off speed stuff. Ruben Galindo is lanky but is solidly throwing 95-97. He has a chance to be a power reliever for Pads in the future.

Always surprised went out of nowhere a players suddenly makes a 180 degree turnaround. Efrain Contreras at SA was terrible his first 4 starts in 2023 then boom … in his last three starts … 15 innings, 5 hits, and only 1 run. Back on the Padres’ radar?

3rd round pick in 2022 … Henry Williams out of Duke … made his minor league debut today with Lake Elsinore. Got hurt by an error in the 1st by the SS Valentine then yield a HR … but good to see him pitching as he was recovering form injury when drafted as I recall (TJ?)

One bad pitch by Williams, up and over the heart of the plate, but showed well otherwise.  Hope he came out of that start feeling fine because he seemed to have good velocity and decent control despite that HR ball.  It was just a quick look, but I like him better than Mazur as a SP prospect.   Let's see what he does in his next couple of starts as he fights his way back from TJ.

Snelling was fighting his control all night but still did a passable job.  Left several FBs up and over the plate resulting in several long loud outs to the OF besides the HR he gave up down the left field line.  Lineup was packed with RH hitters and Snelling had trouble keeping the ball down and often threw outside.  Still yet, showed a lot of poise when he knew he didn't have his best stuff - like his make-up.

Contreras is currently changing speeds quite well. He was throwing 91-96 yesterday. It would be great if he and Espinoza have taken that next step in their development to be part of Padres future plans.

If anyone is following LE closely ... any insight on LHP Austin Krob (12 round pick last year) who has had 6 starts and been very effective. Not so much his performance (as a college pitcher in low A) but what caught my eye was in those 6 starts / 24.2 innings he now has SIX ERRORS per the game day recap!

How is that possible for a SP in such a short span?

Maybe working on his pickoff move?
