Minor League Discussion

The DSL will play a 56 game schedule.  The Padres will have a DSL Brown team and a DSL Gold team; of the 56 games each plays, they will face each other 16 times with the other 40 games on the schedule against other DSL teams.  Season will start on 5 June and end on 22 Aug.

ACL still has not officially posted its schedule.

Anderson Espinoza doing his best impression of Julio Teheran, completely shutting down Sugar Land after 5 innings.  Not sure if this is a one game thing, but he has pitched better since his return from suspension.  Got to see him in his next 2-3 starts to see if he can maintain the breaking stuff dominant repertoire.

Castillo made his 1st rehab appearance and it went well. Hopefully he can stay healthy … not good odds given his history … but if he does might be a good call-up mid-season if one of the LHRP goes down (Hader - Hill - Cosgrove). I give no hope for Pomeranz returning (and being effective).

Side: Kerr who I never had any hope for as an effective ML suddenly is on a very effective hot streak since his return to EP. Big FB so who knows if his command suddenly came around.

Skepticism is warranted regarding Kerr, but watched him closely over the first month of the season and he is much more composed and seems to have confidence in his stuff other than the 99+ FB.  Our LHP bullpen potentially seems in better shape with reinforcements such as Kerr, Weathers and possibly Castillo and Pomeranz down the road.  On the other hand, without Suarez and Garcia and Crismatt not pitching like last year, we are hurting from the right side, overworking Wilson and Honeywell.  Had hopes for Carlton and Hanhold, but they've struggled in their last few opportunities; Lugo has lost the command he showed in ST and Felipe is not quite ready yet, but flashing better control recently.  I'd be looking to pick up a RH RP in trade if doubt has crept in on our current RH RP arms righting the ship.  Nothing consistent to speak of at San Antonio either although Kopps has done better than he has in his first 2 years.

Good RP are hard to come by.

Padres MIGHT have a strategy of keeping Martinez in the pen (he has been really good there) and when Lugo hits (or nears) his innings limit as a SP send him to the pen and recall Weathers to replace him as a starter. Then HOPE Suarez' IL stint ends and he is back to his peak performance.

So, COULD end up from the RHRP side: Suarez, Martinez, Lugo, Wilson, Honeywell and from the LHRP side Hader, Hill, and one of Castillo, Cosgrove, Kerr. That looks to be a good pen. SP could be Darvish, Musgrove, Snell, Wacha, and Weathers, also not bad potentially

Now would expect an injury or two to alter the landscape but that is not a bad baseline. If that mix held ... and the offense begins to deliver their promise ... that should be a playoff caliber team.

About 2 1/2 months of development in the minors to see if some other RP option clicks and vaults into the mix ... or even Morejon comes back from injury or Hamels clicks for a call-up. Most likely the options / strategy late in July will be different than today.

Sure would be nice to be able to take Kerr out and add Pomeranz in.

Forgot Garcia in the mix for RHRP ... not so sharp so far this season but had a very good run at the end of last season. Basically a lot of potential to construct a very strong pen down the stretch with the incumbents.

Any interest in signing Franmil Reyes to a MINOR LEAGUE contract. Reyes has been really poor over the past couple of seasons and not sure any of his coaches are still around with Padres who might get to him and elicit a rebound to his former forum.

However, on a minor league deal, in a AAA/AA system that really lacks some OF/DH upside he may be an interesting gamble. Low cost upside gamble?
