Side note: I guess for contract reasons ... Stammen is on the active roster although we all doubt he will pitch again and probably an IL move is pending.

As expected Stammen is going to the 60 day IL. TBD who replaces him.

Brooks is the replacement for Stammen

This note from the DFR is encouraging ...

San Diego Padres Daily Farm Report: March 31

Left-hander Jay Groome narrowly missed making the big league roster, but as a consolation prize, he got the opening night nod for the Chihuahuas. The big lefty pitched much better than his line indicated. In the third inning, he allowed two runs on four consecutive singles – none of which were hit harder than 76 mph. He walked one and struck out five. He generated a game-high 11 swings and misses and showed a sharp slider. He was sitting in the high-80s with his fastball out of the gate but topped out at 93 mph several times, per Baseball Savant.

Watched the Chihuahua's on MiLB network and they were very impressive, particularly the younger relief staff - Moises Lugo and Angel Felipe.  Lugo's slider is much better and so is his command.  To me, Felipe has an awkward set up and release, which probably accounts for his inconsistency with command, but he has a great FB/changeup combo with good arm action.  This team has a lot of veterans with experience so the position players can't really be called "prospects" but they are going to hit and win a lot of games before some major league team will want them as bench players or they opt out, if that is in their contracts.  Don't know the details of a "Developmental List" but both Cantu and Witte seem kind of old to be thought of as "developmental".

I almost got the pitching staff correct back with my guess on 20 March, but at that time didn't see Weathers and Tapia making the parent team, the injury to Leasher, the DFA of Baez and keeping Espinoza in AAA vice AA.  Those last 2 weeks of spring training really changed things for several of these guys and opened up spots on the EP roster for Groome, Espinoza (who pitched very well in his last Cactus League outing but was horrible before that), Waldron (who I thought was going back to AA) and the 2 Sanchez's.   I still believe that the latter 3 will be the first off the EP roster.  Expected that Font, Hamels and Stammen to be on an injured list but didn't expect them to be joined by Fox or Guerrero; Camarena was thought to be a lock for this roster after an IL stint but maybe he has retired.  Belen and Perez may have been released or sent back down to AA and are on that team's IL.

I'm guessing that Dale is on San Antonio's IL - these adds to the roster usually aren't posted until the season starts.  Probably also where Vela, Jacob, Schlichtholz and a couple of others are.

Just a guess on my part but maybe the “development list” is the league’s term for the “taxi squad” for players not active but still with the team who can be activated at a moment’s notice.

To support the "ignore ST stats" camp ... Teheran starts for EP today and gives up 10 hits in 4.1 innings

Teheran looked terrible.  He had some success with his breaking stuff but his FB maxed out at 88 mph and Sugarland batters were waiting for it and crushing it.  Unless he shows more velocity, don't think he's a fall back starter in the bigs any longer.  Espinoza had more velocity yesterday but his command was not as good.  Still thinks he should be down in San Antonio to get back his rhythm.

RH RP Hanhold and Felipe looking good in today's EP game at Sacramento, although Felipe still has command issues at times with that somewhat awkward delivery to home plate.  When he gets it over he is very hard to hit with his 97+ MPH FB, slider and what looks to be a cutter.  If Crismatt and Garcia keep having difficulties, these are the two guys that might fill their roles.  RP's are so mercurial, so it shouldn't surprise that there may be some drop-off from 2022 for both these guys.  Unfortunately, neither has an option left, so unless they go on the IL, probably lose them to another team willing to take a chance.  Really missing Suarez.  Hopefully, Garcia and Crismatt will regain their form soon.

Tatis looked ready to play and Kohlwey keeps finding ways to get on base and drive in runs.

Excited to see Snelling make his professional debut and to see if Iriarte has developed better command with his potentially dominant stuff.  Musgrove goes tonight in a rehab at Sacramento while Efrain Contreras opens the season for San Antonio.  I know they are trying to keep building Contreras up as a starter but I think he'll have much more success in long relief at the major league level than as a starter.  All 4 of these games are on MiLB and I'll try to watch most of them, beginning with Ft. Wayne at 3:35 our time.

By the way, I forgot to mention in my previous post that if it weren't for Felipe already being on the 40 man, Moises Lugo may be the next person up from El Paso to reinforce the bullpen from the right side until Suarez returns.  He's looking very very good and got the save last night.  Believe they'll rotate Felipe and Lugo as closers in EP until one or both move up to San Diego.
