Minor League Discussion

Quote from Ben Davey on March 28, 2018, 9:21 pm

Rosters wont be announced probably until Monday/Tuesday.  As John noted in his last report the lower levels are already near completion.  It will be the movement of the upper levels that will take a few days.

Ona is in line to be the starting corner OF in Lake Elsinore.  Reports have been positive on him and the shape he came into camp with.  He's been driving the ball with more authority (this was all from Chris Kubiaski).  Bigger reason you havent heard much is the gluttony of prospects that have looked REALLY good in ST.  We have about 100+ prospects that are all noteworthy, its hard to write about them all.

Is that picture of you, Ben?

I've read a lot of reports on a lot of our prospects this spring, most of them glowing. But I haven't read one word about Jorge Ona. Has anyone heard/ read anything or did the madfriars crew see or hear anything while in Peoria?

There seems to be some growing concern (industry, not specific to the team) that he's not going to hit enough to offset his weaknesses in other aspects of the game.

He's big, but I've heard several comments about the swing, which doesn't unlock much power.

TinCaps have announced their roster. It's ridiculous:

Gabriel Arias
Carlos Belen
Luis Campusano
Tre Carter
Thomas Cosgrove
Juan Fernandez
Jose Galindo
MacKenzie Gore
Jordan Guerrero
Henry Henry
Osvaldo Hernandez
Reinaldo Ilarraza
Aaron Leasher
Justin Lopez
Nick Margevicius
Adrian Martinez
Tirso Ornelas
Jeisson Rosario
Esteury Ruiz
Fred Schlichtholz
Ben Sheckler
Will Stillman
Jack Suwinski
Mason Thompson
Jalen Washington

(Assuming Morejon and Lawson open in Elsinore,) the only notable you might have expected to see there who isn't is Almanzar.

And here's the Missions:

Forrestt Allday
Austin Allen
Logan Allen
Colby Blueberg
Auston Bousfield
Rod Boykin
Jose Castillo
Miguel Diaz
Ty France
Michael Gettys
Jason Jester
Jerry Keel
Josh Naylor
Kyle Overstreet
Dillon Overton
Cal Quantrill
Webster Rivas
Jesse Scholtens
River Stevens
Robert Stock
Fernando Tatis
Pete Van Gansen
TJ Weir
Rowan Wick
Brad Wieck

I see this as a long shot .... but COULD Almanzar make the jump to LE at SS (not sure who else is in the running unless it is Baker or Giron).

At his point ... especially with pitchers never quite sure who might be sore and not ready to be placed on a roster. Given the SA / FW placements ... the EP / LE pitching seems to fall in place (with some assumptions on injured bodies). Still a couple of head scratchers on EP position players ... a couple too many unless some DL starts.  That might explain how Bousfield survived in SA.

Almanzar in LE would be interesting. Some reports I have read place Arias and Lopez above Almanzar as the more sure handed/better defensively of those three. Yet, there is no clear SS in LE as of this moment. Nice call.

The new shortstop in Elsinore may just be the old shortstop in Elsinore...

In terms of Baker, he'll open the season on the disabled list. He took a Jordan Guerrero fastball off the top of the head in an intrasquad game and he's in a concussion protocol right now. Still not cleared for baseball activity when last we heard.

Based on the Padres opening series the Minor League season can't get here soon enough......

Interesting that, in AA, they kept the good defensive centrefielder who absolutely can't hit (Bousfield) vs. releasing the good corner outfielder who could hit with some power (Nick Torres). I guess a good defensive CF outweighs a good  more rounded RF.
