Quote from Randy Manese on April 13, 2022, 10:10 pmLake Elsinore really missing Wood which is seemingly putting more pressure on Merrill to carry the team. Clevinger apparently set to make a start at Lake Elsinore on Padres Opening Day Thursday with the game starting at 7:05 PM. Wonder if they let Clevinger participate in the opening ceremonies and then drive him to Lake Elsinore to throw a little later in the game?
San Antonio got behind early as starter got bombed for 7 runs in 1st inning. However, Missions clawed their way back but missed on several bases loaded opportunities to get back in the game and/or pull ahead. Kopps looked good.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 14, 2022, 11:30 pmClevinger looked good after giving a blast to the wall on his first pitch. Threw mostly breaking stuff with his 31 pitches and the Visalia batters were overmatched. Didn't seem to be struggling with that right knee which is the knee he flings in the air with his follow through. Likely will need another rehab start to get to 50 pitches before he comes off the IL - Padres need to see how he feels tomorrow.
I mentioned this pitcher before and he was even more impressive tonight and that is Iriarte. He's still very raw and his mechanics need some cleaning up but when he's around the plate, he is pretty much unhittable; cold may have had something to do with lack of command. Good sinker/slider with velocity. May be moved back to SP if he can become more efficient with his pitches.
In fact, looks like Padres had some good pitching up and down the minors with a few exceptions.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 15, 2022, 7:45 amLike what I've seen of Jarryd Dale. Looks more buffed and confident at the plate and can play almost anywhere on the field - kind of like a younger Matt Batten but with a little more power and a higher ceiling. Could make us forget losing Angeles as a prospect although don't think his best position is shortstop. With the way Merrill is playing, should be in Ft. Wayne by mid-season.

Quote from WindsorUK on April 15, 2022, 8:34 amThat'd be great to see Merrill in Fort Wayne this year.
Does that then put him in San Antonio by mid summer 2023( given his continued progression)?
San Diego debut end of 2024?

Quote from Randy Manese on April 16, 2022, 12:48 amAnother good outing by Garrett Hawkins of the Storm. Pitched differently from first game, going more to his curveball but still had good velocity on FB. Control not as sharp and did not pitch up in the zone like last time. Still, got 5 K's from 17 swings/misses and 2 more K's from 10 called strikes; batters also fouled off 14 pitches and had difficulty barreling him up. Padres drafted a boatload of college pitchers last year and Hawkins could be one of the best of them.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 16, 2022, 10:30 amThe MiLB feeds don't always show the pitch velocity but sometimes the announcers mention it. Hawkins is supposedly up in the 96-97 mph range while Iriarte sits around 93-95. Iriarte is only 20 has further to go than Hawkins but eventually may have the better mix of pitches than Hawkins, who looks very composed and keeps filling up the strike zone.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 16, 2022, 6:54 pmWhat’s the deal with Jackson Wolf?
Doesn’t have many innings to his career yet but has certainly dominated.
6’7” 200 lb lefty.
Whats keeping him out of our top 30?
Age and competition to this point?

Quote from Randy Manese on April 16, 2022, 8:11 pmWolf fits the description of "crafty lefty". He throws a lot of off-speed with a FB that rarely gets to 91. Today I had him with 14 called strikes which resulted in 3 of his K's and 8 swings/misses that resulted in his other 3 K's. There were also 9 foul strikes, again mostly off his off-speed stuff. We've had several LH pitchers over the years that were a lot like Wolf - Margevicius and Cantillo come to mind. Have to see what they do against better hitters before getting too excited about these kind of guys but you can never tell, especially if he adds on a couple of mph on his FB in the next couple of years.
