Quote from fenn68 on May 13, 2018, 8:06 amAfter 3 starts (16 innings) in LE, Paddack has been dominant .... as he was before his TJ in 2016 in low A in 9 starts (42 innings, 0.85 ERA).
Just turned 22 in January, so still in the development phase with only 103 professional innings logged.
Prior to the TJ the scouting on him had a quality low 90s FB with movement and command coupled with an outstanding change-up ... making two easily projectable ML quality offerings. The open issue then if he was going to be a ML starter was could he develop that third pitch (his curve was inconsistent).
I can see were a low 90s FB with movement and command coupled with an outstanding change can dominate A ball players ... maybe even AA/AAA ... but may fall short at the ML level as a SP (at least not to the level of a upper / mid rotation arm). Clearly time to further develop but expect a controlled number of innings in 2018 to work him back after missing 2017.
So the question is where does he stand on the development of that third pitch (curve)?

Looks like Patiño will make the start in Fort Wayne tomorrow.
Jacob Nix is scheduled to throw a game in extended today.
No updates on Muñoz or Rodriguez lately.

Quote from Ryan Payne on May 15, 2018, 6:25 pmTatis goes yard twice today so far - 7th and 8th on the year. Barry Bloom is off somewhere crying in a corner, or should be. The amount of "want him to fail" he has for Tatis is an embarrassment.

Quote from Ryan Payne on May 16, 2018, 9:58 amHow much autonomy do the Padres minor league managers have in terms of pitching staffs? It seems like they leave some kids in too long - Morejon last night didn't necessarily struggle, but his command/control clearly wasn't as good as last start, ending the 5th with 80-ish pictures. Still, he went out for the 6th. Today, Patino goes 5 solid innings in his first start, labors in the 6th and just got pulled to likely ruin a good outing. Is this a directive from upstairs to show some adversity to these kids or does this lay at the feet of the managers themselves?

Quote from David Jay on May 16, 2018, 11:46 amMax pitch counts and target innings for every starter and reliever are set by the pitching coordinator (Eric Junge) each week. Managers have some flexibility under those targets (Wellman, for example, noted that he could have sent Quantrill out for one more inning from a pitch count perspective on Sunday, but chose not to), but the organization definitely wants to push guys to go deeper and figure out how to work when they aren't at peak.
There is nobody anywhere related to professional baseball who would see Patino's sixth inning (or Logan's seventh last night) ruining a good outing. The goal is not to post good ERAs in Fort Wayne and San Antonio so that people scanning box scores and league stats online are giddy. [Not meant to say you are doing that!]

Quote from Ryan Payne on May 16, 2018, 2:33 pmThat was an overreact on my part and a poor choice of words - I get what the end result is, but I was wondering how that ties into a pitcher's confidence if they do have that one bad inning at the end, combined with the fact a lot of kids won't tell their manager what they have left in the tank. Logan pitched a great game last night I thought. Morejon pitched well as well.

Quote from Ryan Payne on May 17, 2018, 9:26 pmWhat kind of physical projection does Baez have left? The body type is such a unique combination that it's hard to draw a realistic comp to him. The fastball has ticked down to 92-94 per tonight's broadcast, with him unable to get through 5 innings to get that elusive first win. Struggled to throw first pitch strikes (I think he was 0 for his 6) and gave up some hard line drive hits, albeit nothing for extra bases. Just wondering if maybe he strengthens the lower half a little bit if he might find more in the tank.

Quote from WindsorUK on May 18, 2018, 9:04 amIs there ANY coach out there who believes in the Mike Marshall philosophy? Where kids strengthen their arms by throwing weighted balls, using their lats instead of their pecs, staying within the AC joint, etc.?
With SO many young kids going under the knife, you'd think at some point they'd revisit their philosophy of pampering these kids.
Gotta be worth a shot doesn't it?
