Minor League Discussion

PreviousPage 128 of 358Next

Random questions about minor league players that, in part, may be part of the return to play for the ML ... especially the 40 man roster types.

  1. Without a MiL season, will 40 man roster players who do not make the 30 man active roster be considered as having used up a minor league option? Does it make a difference if they are on the "taxi squad" or not? Padres have someone like Munoz (not yet on the 60 day IL) or even Ona ... probably not candidates for the final 50 (if that is to be stocked with replacements for 2020 needs). (Also note that Morejon, Bolanos, Reyes have been already optioned to the minors ... will those options be voided without a MiL season?)
  2. Does 2020 count against any of the rules on minor league control? 6 year minor league control? Eligibility for Rule 5? IF not (benefit to the clubs not the players), Padres would not have to put Arias, Trammell, Patino, or Lawson on the winter 40 man. That would keep open slots for some veterans ... and then let ST 2021 sort it out.
  3. Then there is the "taxi squad" for non-roster players. Would putting a non-roster prospect on the taxi squad count as a season? If so, do you want to put Arias, Trammell, or Patino on the taxi squad if you really don't plan on using them to supplement the 30 man (if needed) and not set them up for Rule 5 eligibility next winter?
  4. Pay? the "taxi squad" is not the minor leagues ... not the ML ... some special pay structure? Maybe not important to real minor leaguers or even non-roster veterans BUT if there will be an easy flow between the active and inactive to keep players "fresh" or cover some slumping players, maybe the taxi squad is treated as a version of the IL?

Yes, small stuff but the kind of detail that needs resolution before event occurs.

Some of the minor league cuts by the Padres in MiLB.com:

Former draft picks:

Carter (2018 ... 11th); Kennedy (2015 ... 30); Rogers (2015 ...37th); Gatewood (2018 ... 11th); Dallas (2018 ... 7th); ... Pineda (2017 ... 17th); House (2017 ... 3rd); Mortenson (2018 ... 26th); Smith (2018 ... 22nd); Fallon (2019 ... 4oth).

Others (some recent minor league FA signings I ever heard of):

El Paso: Hernandez; Regnault; Valerio

AMA: Didder; Clarkin; Huffman (was a former draft pick injured for years)

FW: Colletti

AZ: Fernandez; Hubbard; Francisco; Garcia; Eusebio; DeMarco.

I’m really surprised with the release of Dallas and House.......maybe also Gatewood.

Disappointed in Carter(I assume this is Tre Carter from 2016)...great athlete that just couldn’t hit enough.

Yeh, Carter is the 2016 Tre Carter.

House (smaller HS in Texas), Dallas (off the grid HS in upstate NY), Carter (HS football talent), and even Greenwood (catcher who missed a lot of playing time in College) were all "upside gambles" with limited exposure.

All received some decent coverage as Padre picks but when you consider they were 2 11th rounders, 1 7th rounder, and a 3rd rounder ... not really surprising. The part of the draft where you take those higher risk shots ... boom or bust rather than some safer gambles that still may peak out well before the ML.

I guess I was surprised because a couple of those kids barely got even one full season of minor league AB's.

Obviously the results weren't good...but giving up seems a bit soon for them.

But I don't know the ins and outs of what their issues are...obviously the Padres don't feel they will ever improve enough.

Lack of a minor league season, especially effecting the low A to AA teams, will probably help SD retain some of its burgeoning minor leaguers that haven't quite developed fully yet.  I see about 7 top position players and 3 top pitchers that could be protected from Rule 5 or are reaching minor league FA but many still have question marks - especially the 2016 international class.  Padres could gamble that Ornelas, J Rosario, Marcano will be passed over due to lack of consistent performance; similarly, might not have to protect Potts or Lawson.  Trammell and Patino are locks to be added to the 2021 roster (maybe Arias?) and Gore will make his way onto the roster in 2020, so it will be interesting to see how many new faces make it or are part of trades in the upcoming months.  I'm really disappointed I won't be able to see the growth in Campusano and Abrams this year - they are the next closest.

2021 placement of the prospects will be a challenge:

  1. all lost a season of development
  2. some of the "better prospects" might get some expanded Fall instructs ... maybe more competitive
  3. If baseball does go the 4 full season teams and 50 player cap for AZ players ... that cuts a lot of players out of the mix ... and in turn may push some prospects up a level (cutting an older fringe player to keep a younger prospect in AZ).
  4. add that some fringe prospects might just call it quits under the circumstances

======

Given the current rules: I expect Trammell, Patino, Arias, Lawson to be the only players protected. Lawson has too much upside to expose even with TJ ... someone would take him and tuck him away on their 60 day IL until ready (which the Padres could do to start 2021 if they need the roster spot out of ST).

Does anyone know at this time whether cancellation of minor league season will also include the Dominican Summer League?  Only asking because Padres have at least two interesting prospects there, Preciado and Mena, that would be interesting to track if only for 50-60 games.

I would guess the DSL is also cancelled ... it is normally considered part of the minor league structure with an affiliation with a MLB club.

However, depending on the COVID level in the Dominican Republic ... could see a camp open up and informal competitions. Not as though teams in the DSL were making money before ... basically funded by the MLB club.

With the minor leagues cancelled for 2020 and the ongoing desire of MLB to downsize the minors and take more control of operational decisions ... there is some speculation that maybe half of the franchised may go bankrupt .... likely other investors may want to step in an buy the franchise BUT is this and opportunity for MLB clubs to fill the void and buy some franchises on the cheap and gain total control of decisions on things such as park standards, etc.

For billion dollar franchises ... with annual payrolls in the mid-$100MM range .... the investment cost of a minor league franchise is not that much of a hurdle.
