Nice expose' coincidentally done by Trevor Bauer.

This brings up to me  the topic of their friendship and the fact Bauer promises that he will only sign one year deals.

I know the money may not work...but,if we go deep into the Playoffs,or God forbid win it all, would the revenue be there to be in on Bauer this off season?

LOL... Greedy!   I'm going to say "No".  I really think we got the best possible #1 (I think of Clevinger more as #2, but whatever) SP, bat first Starting C, possible 7th-8th inning RP (Austin Adams), 2B, & CF (at least main part of a platoon) as cheaply as possible in literally all of MLB...

There will be some needs this offseason, but mostly around the periphery & depth.  Preller figured out a way to move forward & get better without costing a fortune.

Do we need to be? For the next two seasons, you have Clevinger, Lamet, Paddock, Gore, and Patino. Plus Davies for one more, which as was forecast  by Fenn, who is doing extremely well this season. Could argue that he is our #2 behind Lamet right now, based on performance.

Man. We just traded for Clevinger and people are already wanting us to sign Bauer? I don't see the Padres spending any more money on starting pitching free agents. Or any free agents really.

If people are looking for a Bieber type ACE we don't have one and we are not going to have one until one of our guys breaks through. I would never have considered Strasburg an ACE until the 2019 playoffs. Guys step up when needed. Any of ours may in the playoffs this year.

No.

But Paddack is struggling,Patiño is in the Pen(tells us a little) and Gore obviously is not ready considering Patiño and Campusano have come up ahead of him.

With (hopefully) the Minor leagues back to normal next year there is no reason Gore and Patiño can’t start in AAA.

Plus depending on how our pitching holds up to finish This season (and the playoffs) you never know.

Lastly,Bauer says he’s gonna only sign 1 year deals.....so it won’t be a 100 mil investment.

You NEVER can have too much pitching.........it’s just a thought now that Clevinger is a Padre.

Yikes! MONEY!!!!!

Bauer is making $17.5MM in his last arbitration year ... as a FA this winter, especially if he is seeking only a one year deal, will be easily $25MM+. Then don’t be surprised that Bauer ... now that he is a FA for the first time ... to go for that big multi-year deal with an organization he likes. Really his first chance to be in full control of his future.

Padres’ payroll is likely already at a critical point without a Bauer type commitment. I am guessing they are already at about $135MM after letting Richards, Yates, Rosenthal, Castro, Profar to FA.  The add of Clevinger’s base plus what should be large arbitration decisions on Clevinger, Lamet, and Davies ... that gets them there. That is only about $15MM shy of the 2020 original plan and coming off a season of financial losses and 2021 financial uncertainty makes going back to that level (or higher) is a non-starter.

IF more money is available ... gamble with the depth of potential with the SP and focus on RH closer (Rosenthal / Yates) in the $8MM range and some INF/OF bench upgrades.

Padres have no real ML talent for the OF/INF bench returning for 2021 or in the upper minors (Mateo, Allen, Garcia are not the answer) and RHRP quality starts with Pagan and Stammen (?) a bunch of ??????, three of which the last place Mariners gave up on by trading them to the Padres.

SP go with Clevinger, Lamet, and Davies (few teams have much depth past the first three) and the work the best 2 out of Paddack, Morejon, Baez, Patino, Gore.

Just a challenge to allocate a limited amount money to try to build the most effective total 26 man roster.

I know this is supposed to be a Clevinger post, but it seems to have moved to available money for next year.   Assuming all our eligible arbitration guys get what we expect, don't think there is much left to add a supplementary or complementary piece through FA.  If you just look at some of the OF's available, Springer (pro-rated 21M currently), Ozuna (18M), Brantley (16M) even Joc Pederson (7.75M) are probably more than we are willing to pay for a 4th OF or to replace Pham.  Unless you unload Myers or Hosmer, don't think that kind of money is available for Bauer or any other top of the line pitcher or infield depth.  I look for low cost trades, maybe parlaying some of the remaining excess depth such as Lucchesi, Mejia or some of the other lower level RPs that might still have potential.  Money may be very tight in 2021, at least in the beginning, so expect to be conservative in any player adds that come with substantial salary.

Getting back on topic 🙂

Interesting write-up ... seems as though the Indians were thinking money and longer term benefit.

The assessment that no teams were considering dealing Top 100 prospects for long term financial considerations is something to ponder. Looks as though Preller .. to win now ... pushed the edges of that logic but could with a deep farm system and yet retained his top prospects.

I suspect Cleveland was frustrated not to get one or two elite prospects for Clevinger (a few years ago that would seem logical for an elite SP with two more years of control). Padre prospects are nice and surely was volume play ... but not elite. Maybe one develops and that is Cleveland's hope.

I confident that Preller understood the position the other organizations were taking on dealing prospects and that influenced his offer ... lower. Sounds as though that is a go forward strategy in baseball .... top prospects are not getting dealt .... how does that impact Preller's strategy to build teams for the next few years?

An unofficial radio report is saying Sunshine is out for the year 🙁
