Clevinger had another good outing, throwing 67 pitches. Most pitches were breaking balls - cutter, curve, slider - and he generally located them well. Fastball velocity was down - hit 93 a few times but mostly 91. Had one hard hit ball that went to the wall in right center but most were ground balls or not that hard hit line drives.
A little scare in the first, when he stumbled trying to field a slow grounder to the first base side. Might have affected his control a little bit but there was still a lot of swing and miss on those breaking balls and the fastball that was at the letters or above. This should be his last rehab, so we should see him activated right around the May roster reduction time. I'm guessing Avila will be the likely pitcher dropped back to AAA.
El Paso lost the game because Knehr got bombed for two home runs. He's not looking that strong this year and fallen behind Scholtens if we need an emergency RHP starter although it doesn't seem we will for awhile (I hope!).

If Clevinger is actually ready to take the mound and shows his major league talent.....another bullet in the gun and makes this a very formidable starting rotation....Darvish, Manaea, Musgrove, Gore, Martinez, Clevinger with Snell in the wings....this could really be a quality problem to have 🙂

I believe the target was for Clev to get to 70 pitches, so it's nice they made it to right around that mark. It's hard for me to get excited about him, though... Even if he gives us a nice boost this year, he's gone in 4 months after costing us Quantrill and Owens and stupid Naylor. Pretty crappy luck with him.

04.27: Mike Clevinger (knee) allowed one run over 3 2/3 innings in his thirdminor league rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A El Paso. (Clevinger scattered four hits and a walk while striking out five in the 67-pitch outing. Of those 67 pitches, 45 went for strikes. The 31-year-old right-hander was placed on the injured list just before Opening Day because of a knee sprain, but he's on the fast track now and should be ready to join the Padres' rotation sometime in early May. There might be one final rehab start coming next week.)
