Michel Baez

Second time this season that Grisham had the ball bounce off his glove after he made a jump at the wall. In both cases, it appeared had he stayed on the ground, he would have caught the ball with the top of his glove rather than have the ball bounce off the bottom/heel of the glove.  He's not a superior CF, but still a good one and better than anyone else we have on the roster to play that position.

Cronenworth's made two errors recently so has got to get it together again because there is little margin for error with our RPs.  One was a fielding error and this one was a throwing error.  Got to keep slowing it down and not rush the play mentally.

Cro has been knocking the cover off the ball. He has completely solidified our weakest position. I think we can live with an error or two. His defense has been gold until today.

Baez could have escaped the inning without damage but for the Cronenworth / Grisham plays.

However, need to look at his command (and issue when he was up last season) ... he was missing the plate by a lot .... 28 pitches in this outing.

First outing of the season so some slack ... apparently at the alternate site his command was improved ... will see the next outing.

I reviewed the game this morning and would have to give a split evaluation on Baez.  First two batters, he did really well and just got that bloop flair to right and the comebacker that should have closed out the inning with a double play.  After that, it seemed that balk call shook his rhythm and he was all over the place - mainly high and outside.  Very few times he was even close to where Hedges was setting up and got too much of the plate when he got closer to the plate.  Seems to be afraid to throw inside but with his stuff, he's going to have to do that.  First two batters, A-, next 3 batters, D-.  Think he deserves another chance, but got to have better command.

Tough way for your first appearance to go.

Still a young guy....was out of the inning if not for the throwing error....then the balk....then the bases loaded...then the fly ball that should have been caught.

He got flustered thru all that I’m sure.

Jason E,

Wasn't trying to knock Cro but just an observation of what seemed to happen in the game last night.  Cronenworth has played a much more solid defense in his rookie season than Tatis Jr. did last year.  I'm all in for Cro and hope he continues having a great year.  We need his calmness and his ability to perform under pressure.  Sorry if I gave you the impression I was down on him.

No way anyone could be down on Cro, biggest pleasant surprise in all of baseball. Not flashy just looks like he belongs up here.

I missed that game, so I'm actually "relieved" 🙂 to hear that what looks like an implosion on paper wasn't really all Baez' fault!

From today's DFR ...

Key Stats: RHP Michel Baez, 3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K;

Prospect Watch: Boy, is Michel Baez a sight for sore eyes. The big righty threw 30 of his 42 pitches for strikes in a smooth three innings in his second rehab appearance for Lake Elsinore, adding to the list of possible bullpen options for the Padres.

From today's DFR on AA San Antonio game ...

Rehabbing RHP Michel Baez came in and immediately lit up the gum.  The broadcast had him sitting mid-90s with his fastball, and while location is still off (23 strikes, 13 balls) when he is even close to the zone, he can be unhittable. He struck out five of the first six batters he faced.
