Manny Machado signs with Padres!!!!!
Quote from MrPadre19 on February 27, 2019, 12:36 pmWe all know Machado is a great player....but i didn't know al of this.
Manny Machado has hit the ball harder in the air than any player in MLB the last 2 years.
301 times he has hit the ball in the air with an exit velocity over 95 mph the last two seasons.....best in baseball.

.271 /.321 / .448 ( .769 OPS)
I take the over.
From a SLG standpoint moving out of Baltimore may not be that big a deal given his "hard hit" ball profile and in the NL West the problem is usually hitting out to RF ... Machado is a pronounced pull hitter. Hitting in AZ and COLO is clearly desirable but going out in LF in SD ... even SF / LA is not a major challenge. Add that he is also a good doubles hitter.
OBP maybe be more an issue depending where the bat him in the line-up. Since he will be perceived as the alpha dog in the line-up he will get pitched around (a ton of walks) if he is followed by a non-power threat (or double play candidate) ... thinking Hosmer with this ground ball propensity. Go that way and should get a high OBP.
If they drop him in the line up with the some on-base threats ahead of him ... would get more good pitches which may lower his OBP but add to his SLG and run production.
Maybe to start the season a Kinsler - Urias - Hosmer (L) - Machado - Myers - Renfroe - Hedges - Margot ..... flipping Kinsler to 8th and put Jankowski at #1 vs RHP. Just feel it out but get some OBP for the slots ahead of Machado.

.280/.345/.480. (.825ops).. Is where I have him at.. He has had better years... His career avg are right at .822 OPS.. And he is entering his prime..and is the Alpha in SD.. One can argue he has yet to be the one and only Alpha in either Baltimore or LAD... So I think I am being conservative with my prediction but I think he will be a tremendous hitter for us...Hosmer last yr (remember Pet co is not kind to lefties) was pretty darn "elite" onnthe road..but awful at home.. Machado being righty and extreme pull hitter should do very well here..

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 4, 2019, 9:39 amMay depend on who hits behind him and how he performs.
Will Machado hit 3rd?
Will Renfroe/Reyes hit clean up?

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 4, 2019, 1:40 pmManny Machados' first hit is a double to Right Center.
Fitting.
I would have laid even money on that being it.

Quote from LynchMob on April 4, 2019, 11:52 amBecause of the kicking-Aguilar incident (and others?), Manny is going to get reactions like this for the rest of his career ...

In this case, I don't agree ... but I don't dispute that Manny's past has some ... questionable ... behavior.

Bob Brenly is "bush league." That is the same term he used toward Ben Davis when, several years ago, he had the gall to bunt for a base hit in the 9th inning of a close game which broke up a D-backs no-hit bid. I guess the bush league has many affiliates.
That said, in the moment the placement of the bat by MM did cause raised eyebrows for me.

Kevin: After last night’s “bush league” play from Machado, I’m wondering if teams were turned off by his on-field antics during his free agency. Do you believe this is why teams were hesitant about signing him?
1:15 Jay Jaffe: I think Bob Brenley and Steve Berthaiume were bush league in applying that term to Machado over that specific play, but there’s little doubt that some teams shied away from him due to his reputation for on-field mischief, which goes back further than last October. And I think ultimately some of those teams will regret passing on him.
