Manny Machado signs with Padres!!!!!
Quote from fenn68 on August 21, 2022, 7:29 amMathematically the payroll could work given low cost replacements for the FA after 2023 … Darvish, Snell, Pomeranz, Hader, Garcia, Alfaro, Suarez … and potentially Profar, Martinez depending on how the options are exercised. Add that Kim is on a mutual option after 2024.
I am a bit more cautious on the prospects actually developing into productive ML … especially pitching and getting some veteran ML quality will just put pressure on more low cost options to fill other slots.

You don’t think Manny would want to be part of the Soto/Machado/Tatis trio?
I don’t care who you put around them….wouldn’t take much to keep that a winning lineup with Soto and Tatis just hitting their prime.
Those 3 would be approx $110…leaves another $140 to play with.
He would IF he is paid.
Don’t forget Musgrove is on the tab for $20MM. Take those four and add the “benefits” and there should be about $100MM left for the other 22 players to keep them under the tax level. Going to need a lot of league minimum guys being productive for years to pay for some more veteran pieces to round out the roster (especially SP).
Potentially a lot of churn of the younger players every year to keep the payroll under control.
Our BP is one area where we can save a ton of money beyond 2023
Hader..Pomz.. Suarez and Martinez are all paid a lot
Garcia/Adams/Morejon/Hill/Wilson/Baez/Cristmat/Castillo not as much with only Garcia above $2 mil.. and most at minimum
We could trade 2 of the 1st group and still have 10 BP arms for 7-8spots.. + another 1/2 a dozen ready at AAA

Well Hader, Pomeranz, Suarez, and Garcia will be FA after 2023 ... so that is just going to happen to open space in 2024. Martinez is still an opt-in (buyout) question every year.
A lot of BP options who at this point are just names ... so quite a bit of risk can pull 8 RP of quality together ... but they will have to do that just from the FA action.
Probably would, for now, not have Morejon as a RP with by 2024 Clevinger, Manaea, Snell, and Darvish are scheduled to be gone via FA ... Morejon will be (or try to be) as SP.
Pretty sure they could make the money work for re-working Machado's contract, signing Soto along with Tatis and Musgrove ... but (if they get under the penalty level at some point) pulling together a contender with the remaining money filling out the rest of the roster will be a challenge (and a lot of luck). Not getting a highly rated wave of prospects coming in 2024-5 ... especially SP.

Quote from fenn68 on August 21, 2022, 9:38 amStrawdog for 2025 before considering FA signings (not much left to trade):
C: Nola (ARB 3) / Campusano
INF: Machado / Tatis / Rosario / Cronenworth (ARB 3)
OF: Beaty (ARB 3) / Grisham (ARB 3) / Soto
DH/Bench: no "incumbents" so out of Luis (1B/DH), Doersching (1B/DH), Merrill (INF), ???? and those a optimistic views about their development in 2023-24 since none have had a full seasons in High A. Expect Kim opt out of his mutual option after 2024.
Note that ARB 3 players will be getting paid much more and it is the walk year to FA ... issue for 2026.
No idea on pitching (and not confident in all the 9 I list will be ML quality):
SP: Musgrove / Morejon (ARB 3) / Groome / Weathers / +1
RP: Crismatt (ARB 3) / Baez / Knehr / Castillo (ARB 3) / Wilson / + 3
Just from a "bodies" standpoint the Padres can field 26 players and stay under the penalty level ... but the pitching will kill them baring a miracle improvement from the internal options or pushing some bigger money on SP and maybe shaving some money in the thin position players (ARB 3 types will be the ones making the money).

Quote from WindsorUK on August 28, 2022, 3:38 pmMoney well spent on Machado! And most likely underpaid after next year.
If this dude leaves, we'll be scraping the bottom of the barrell for awhile.

IF! NYY / NYM might be tossing out big money for Manny. Donaldson will be gone from NYY and the METS may not want to rely on a young prospect at 3B. I would puts the odds of him opting out and moving on greater than 50%.
He can read the tea leaves in SD starting in 2025 and the rest of his deal ... and that is not contending. He will go for the money ... play on a contender ... be on the East Coast ... and get away from the organization that badly handled his best friend Hosmer. Probably does not like Tatis either or fish tacos.

Quote from BoosterSD on September 21, 2022, 9:20 amI know that we have been gripping about making or not making the playoffs, and so I dont think we have broached this subject.
Does anyone else agree with me, that Machado is the NL MVP?
If you look at his numbers, he is 4th in OPS, 5th in SLG, 6th in OBP, 5th in BA, with 29 HRs, and 93 RBIs. He plays gold glove defense, and really has no help most of the season.
In NYM, its been Lindor and Alonso, in STL its Goldschmidt and Arenado, LAD its Freeman, Betts, and Turner, in PHI Schwarber and Harper (even though he was injured for a good time), in ATL you have Olson and Riley, and even in MIL you have Adames and Tellez. Machado has done this with really no one for his protection. Even Bell, Soto, and Drury havent helped much.
You could argue that all the other teams would still have had success with one of those guys missing; however, you take Manny from SD, and we fighting for last place this season.
Thoughts???

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 21, 2022, 11:13 amUnfortunately voters don't look at it that way....it's become simply which player puts up the most impressive stats.
They do consider the teams record and if they made the playoffs...but they don't even consider defense or base running.
It will go to Goldschmidt...it would even if he was a full time DH.
