MacKenzie Gore

The only problem I see with that path; is due to the blister issue last season, not many innings pitched last season. And even with a bump this season; what is Gore's max innings going to be in 2020, 125 tops?

Not different from Paddack ... so with the other starters likely targeted for the 150+ inning mark in 2020 ... they could just control Gore's innings (the standard skip a start periodically and limiting his innings in each start).

Rather have him get his 125 innings at the ML level than in the minors for his development and arguably get 20 better ML starts for the Padres than whomever would be in instead of Gore.

Maybe a piggyback situation with a RHSP like Quantril or Lamet (innings limit himself) where Gore starts and goes 3-4 innings and then bring Cal/Dinelson in for 4-5. Changes the look for the batter and then hopefully Yates for the save in the 9th.

BA's Jim Callis loves MacKenzie Gore 🙂

With Gore's promotion to AA ... time to speculate when he debuts with the Padres? I would not rule out breaking with the Padres out of ST next year but if not, very soon thereafter.

Have to throw out the old way of thinking are consider the recent approach by the Padres (and in MLB) of getting the young prospects to the ML fast. If anything Gore is not just a prospect but an elite prospect projected as a top of the rotation arm. Would not be unrealistic to have Gore as one of the 5 best (if not the best) of the Padres' SP candidates next ST. Clearly the Padres don't care about "starting the clock" ... see Tatis, et. al over the past couple of seasons.

Also, consider the willingness of the Padres to move prospects with no AAA time and limited AA time. In the past two years consider the following: AAA/AA/A+/A innings the season prior to their debuts ...

-- / 38 / 52 / -- ... Paddack

-- / 60 / 79 / -- ... Lucchesi

-- / 55 / 68 / -- ... Lauer

-- / 19 / 59 / 76 ... Margevicius

-- / ?? / 79 / -- ... Gore ... enough time in 2019 to get about 10 "pitch controlled" starts

Note that Tatis (also an "elite") only played 88 games in AA in 2018 and made the jump.

With Gore's arrival probable, the arrival of Richards (for 1 year), the good work by young arms Paddack, Lucchesi, Lauer, and the upside of Lamet .... could be over subscribed with quality SP. Not sure what that means for L.Allen or Quantrill but might suggest trading for a SP under long control (at a high cost) is not going to be a priority if looking beyond the immediate 2019. Plus more quality arms are near (Patino +).

Gore's arrival has to make Preller's game plans on improving the roster much more flexible ... maybe trading some SP for ??? or take some of those prospect arms to the pen.

if we are in it on 8/31/19 I wouldnt be surprised if Gore gets added to the active roster 25... and makes his debut 2019... why 8/31 ? because that way he could play in postseason vs just a 40 man roster expansion 9/1 call up... Obviously this only happens if Gore's dominance continues at AA

Makes sense if the Padres are really in it and Gore is what we hope he is. One drawback may be he could be hitting an innings limit by the time Aug 31 arrives.

Plus the Pads would need to be sure that Gore in Sept would be a difference maker over the pitchers that got them there ... otherwise don't add him to the 40 man this winter (he does not need to be added for Rule 5 protection) and make the add after ST as the Padres DFA or make 60 DL moves (e.g. Espinosa).

I would prefer that NONE of our legitimate starting pitching prospects ever pitch for El Paso.

We are proving this year(and its been obvious to me for some time) that it is not necessary.

There's no reason a legitimate prospect like Gore/Paddack can't go straight from AA to the majors and that goes double if your AAA affiliate

has a launching pad for a Park.

Gore's debut in AA was very good (about 93 pitches). Don't know how much they will let him pitch until the end of the season but if he continues to be effective in AA down the stretch ... I will even be more convinced that we see Gore in 2020 maybe even on the opening day roster (a la Paddack).
