Luis Patino

A note from Aug 9th ...

https://www.mlb.com/padres/news/padres-are-must-watch-team-in-mlb

The Padres today got 100+ mph strikeouts by two different pitchers:

Dinelson Lamet: 100.2 (1st inning)

Luis Patino: 100.3 (8th inning)

The last team to do that was the Yankees on Aug. 13, 2017 (Aroldis Chapman and Dellin Betances).

Future Closer

Went back and looked at the scouting report from a few years ago when he was a Top 100 prospect. Forgot how highly he was regarded … projected as a #2 SP potential … and had fastball, slider, curve rated above average … change and control average. Some comment on the fastball / slider combo really dominated RHH. FB in the upper 90s and slider in the upper 80s … both with quality life / movement.

He has had injuries … do idea if those diminished his velocity. However, control / command has really faded so maybe Niebla can see the delivery flaws and correct them and the Padres get a gem.

Just a bit concern that TB sold him to CWS for cash and CWS put him on waivers … what did (or did not) they see in Patino to just pass on him given his past “stuff” and relative youth.

He's basically this year's Honeywell. There's something to dream on and being out of options might give him a leg up if he shows well. It's a no risk gamble on upside.

Looking at Patino's statcast data, it seems his 4-seam FB lost 1 mph from 2020 to 2021, then another mph from 2021 to 2022. It went from averaging just under 97 on average in 2020 to just under 95 in 2022. It evened out at 95 in 2023, but that is likely because 2023 is when he was converted to relief. His slider speed has held steady between 84 to 86 throughout his career, while his changeup has dropped a few mph, which is good.

There are articles out there saying that his oblique injury caused a big loss of velocity, but I am not seeing it. It seems to have been a steady decline. I am less excited about him now after seeing this, but we will see.
