Luis Patino

I'm going to continue to compare him to Pedro Martinez until his results stop to resemble Pedros.

#46? Hijole... If anything I have him moving into top 20 as in 18 or so for 2020..

DRU (SD):

When will we see gore and patino in big leagues?

Kyle Glaser: Assuming both stay healthy, Gore before Patino, both this year at some point.

Michael (San Diego):

Feels like Carlos Martinez's trajectory for the Cardinals would be a good outcome for Patino - and that it would leave most Padres fans disappointed?

Kyle Glaser: That's an interesting comparison that has some legs. I think if Padres fans are disappointed with a two-time All-Star starter by 25 who transitions into a firebreathing reliever later on, then they need to re-adjust their expectations.

Sergio Q (Tijuana, Mexico):

Do you see the Padres skipping AAA with both Gore & Patiño?

Kyle Glaser: It's possible. There's definitely a plausible scenario where both start back at Double-A this year, and injuries/ineffectiveness in the majors leads them to be called up straight from Amarillo if the timing lines up.

Wow!   Corresponding roster move will be interesting.  Guessing the "extra" 6th OF.  Could see Patino tonight to help protect the back of the bullpen!  Also lends credence to the idea of giving someone other than Paddack the last start in the next (Dbacks) series, so CP will face LAD first in next 4-game series.

Patino could start or more likely piggyback/back up in the next Dback series.... or even start the 4th game of the next LAD series?

From some reports the plan to use Patino out of the pen and at some point see him in high leverage situations out of the pen. Starting may be in the future but not apparently the current plan.

Sounds as thought his work at the alternative site was very impressive to "force" this move now.

=====

A move has to be made today to activate him ... then in a few days two more removed from the active roster to drop to 28 ... and likely that is followed by another move to accommodate Hosmer's return.

Two pitchers and two position players?

That's my guess.  But not a "given" Hosmer is back 8/8 when first eligible.

Like what I saw with Patino yesterday although Mud's comment that the FB was straight as an arrow worries me.  If we dial it back to get more movement or throw a cutter that's different from his slider, he could overcome that issue, if it even is an issue.  Patino is still developing and learning and he seems to be the kind of kid that will intensely keep improving his craft.  Probably one more relief appearance and then inserted into the rotation - possibly against Colorado?

Oops, thought we played the Rockies after the we play in LA, but it looks like Arizona again.  In that case, for sure he'll probably get a start during that road trip.  By that time, we should have sorted out the Lucchesi/Quantrill dilemma.

Listened to Acee and his "speculation" is that we have a good chance to see Patino in a starting role the next time the Lucchesi spot in needed. That could be next Tuesday at the LAD or the following Sunday vs. AZ.

No speculation on the fate of Lucchesi or Quantrill.
