Vasquez is horrible. He has totally lost it. AJP should use him in a trade for Skubal.

Defense is killing us

Was all downhill from there……..

This was truly a bad effort ... pitching and defense.

Vasquez has turned the corner ... the wrong corner. In his first 9 starts he did pitch over his head (2.68 ERA) but teased he could be effective through the season (maybe an ERA just below 4) BUT his ERA now has soared to 4.56 over the last 7 games (June is at 8.27). Command is gone. He now joins Canning, Giolito, and Waldron as ineffective below average SP without minor league options ... can (will) the Padres find another "injury" to send Vasquez to the minors? Looks as though Marquez is near ready to be activated off his rehab. Plus Brito just did 72 pitches for EP and has looked effective in his return after TJ ... on the roster so an option.

Marinaccio also pitched poorly ... he seems to alway an in / out type arm. Also out of options but down the road looks like the player out when Rodriguez is activated (no doing some rehab in SA) and/or Estrada returns.

======================================

Padres have one of the best defenses in MLB ... but not last night. Better defense may have made the game closer but doubt would have chance the outcome.

Wagner's error really let open the floodgates but bad plays by Tatis and Merrill also set up LAD scoring. That initials failed diving attempt by Tatis that ended up a triple could have been limited to a single if he just took a more conservative route and played it for a single. If so, the flyable that Merrill mis-read and should have been caught would not have delivered a run. Then throw in Tatis' mis-play on the bounce off the RF wall that yield extra bases.

Yep, this was a real clunker.

At the halfway point ... still in a playoff slot!

In addition, I, also, think the Stammen mismanaged the pitching leaving both Vasquez and Marinaccio in too long.

The Padres are 43-38 and 9 games back at the half point. Last season, at the half point they were 44-37 and 7 games back at the half point and that was with better pitching.

Let's hope AJP trades for better pitching and the Padres have a better game today with King on the mound and a better second half.

GO PADRES!

Stammen had to make the call ... noting well behind in the game ... how to get innings out of Vasquez / Marinaccio ... rather than do more to burn the other (better) arms in the pen knowing a long stretch (including LAD/CUBS) coming soon.

Sacrifice a pawn while positioning to win in the future.

To me all the other stuff is on the fringe ... it is the ineffectiveness of Vasquez that is the core problem setting the environment of other issues to get highlighted.

Game 3 Lineup

1. Tatis RF

2. Taylor LF

3. Merrill CF

4. Machado 3B

5. Sheets 1B

6. Bogaerts SS

7. Andujar DH

8. Song 2B

9. Duran C

King P

Is It just me? Or King really struggles after 65-70 pitches more often than not?

King seems like he's been battling his command all year. He looked a little frustrated even while he was getting decent results early. It all fell apart in the 4th. We're going to need the rotation as whole to get a lot better and provide a lot more length.

I'm not sure if they can really measure this, but I also feel like we have to be one of the worst teams when it comes to making effective use of the challenge system. Full count with the bases loaded to Freeman and a pitch that looked like it clipped the zone goes unchallenged. If it's anywhere close I feel like it should be an instant challenge in that situation. I know that it's easy to judge watching with a box on the broadcast. It seems like we pretty regularly finish games with both challenges still available when there were clear opportunities to make good use of them though.

SP needs to at least have some arms that can give 6 inning performances on a somewhat consistent basis. Bullpen will be burned out by the end of August.

Buehler seems to be capable ... King has done it and has the stuff ... and MAYBE a return of Pivetta (late July/Aug gives enough to get them to the playoffs and those three might make a decent playoff rotation if on form.

But who survives Vasquez - Canning - Giolito - Marquez - Waldron (pick two) for the last two SP? Is Brito a dark horse? Is there at last an innings eater (and decent) available in the trade deadline that the Padres have the assets to acquire?

SP it its own issue BUT SAT and SUN the bats seem to have gone back to silent mode ... Sunday against a lesser arm. 1 or 2 runs per game is not going to win you a lot.

Cubs are red hot for the next three in CHICAGO then a revisit to the LAD in LA for four ...
