LHH OPTIONS FOR 2020

I like Jankowski and would REALLY like to see a season of Margowski in CF.

I don't know what happened to Myers this year but I still think he has a good chance of being the guy we've seen the last 30 days than the one we saw the first 4 months.

I'm all for bringing in a stud LH hitting outfielder......but I "do not" want to just bring in another "guy" because he hits lefthanded.

Get a guy who can hit at the top of the order or do with what we have.

I agree we need to send Naylor to AAA so he can mash and we can package him to an AL team ala Franmil.

Renfroe I just don't know....are all of his recent struggles injury related?

Is this just an excuse?

I like him in the lineup against all lefthanders but wouldn't mind Cordero(if can stay healthy) getting some of his AB's against righties.

Any of those guys would cost us a fortune in prospects. I don't see how everyone on every team's forum thinks that they can package their garbage prospects for a star or star prospect. Look what Trammell cost us. Can you imagine what Tucker, Benintendi, or McNeil would cost? McNeil is a star and the last thing the Mets want is another second baseman to sit behind Cano. Why do you dislike Mejia behind the plate? The man is a descent catcher and a very good hitter with a cannon. Catcher is a very hard position to get a great hitter because it is so demanding. Mejia is built for catcher. You don't upgrade your lineup by moving him to a different position. We upgrade by upgrading left field directly.

Yes, I know all of those guys are tough gets, I mentioned that in my original post. I do not think we could get them for trash prospects. The fact is, these guys are better than almost any prospect we have and probably any current OF we have. However, except for HOU, the other two teams that have issues that could reduce the costs in prospects. And that is money. Both BOS and NYM have money issues, BOS because of the luxury cap. And NYM with "poor" owners because of Bernie. So, deals dont necessarily have to be all prospects.

I personally think the Renfroe's injuries thing is an excuse.

Potential trade idea. Send Renfroe, Luchessi, and 2 mid level MiL P prospects to BAL for Alex Cobb and maybe some cash back to SD. Hoping that he is healthy next season and Balsley can work his voodoo on him.

Is this forum made up entirely of Alex Cobbs family? The love for Cobb here is unreal. Booster, if AJ traded Renfroe or Joey straight up for Cobb, I would question his sanity.

Im probably the biggest Cobb fan, and I would personally rather work a trade around Myers and Cobb. But I dont think that BAL would go for Myers with the Davis contract on their books as well. And when Cobb is right, Luchessi will NEVER be what Cobb is. Luchessi and Lauer are both mop up pitchers on real teams. And we wont contend until they are bullpen mop ups or traded for other pieces.

Renfroe’s injuries may be real but turning 28 with 1267 ML AB his 2019 stat line is the same as his career line with a stronger 2019 1st half (but not great) offset by an abysmal 2nd half. Sort of his career ebb and flow. Basically a power hitter in an era where everyone is a power hitter but little else ... just bad OBP for an OF / power hitter.

Not buying into him finally getting it as a hitter ... see more of the Hedges annual storyline of having really worked on his offense and will be better ... not.

That should be what Cobb WAS in 2013 and 2014 ... he never recovered successfully from his TJ and has had two BAD seasons and one mediocre season ... plus 2019 which he basically has missed with a lumbar injury. Turning 32 for next season with two years on his contract at $14MM and $15MM. He can be had by anyone who would take the contract ... they would probably eat some just to get him out of Baltimore and save some money.

Side on Baltimore .... next season their payroll is really low even with the bad deals with Davis and Cobb so the COULD add some but they are not all that well financed and are clearly the 2nd worst team in MLB (better that Detroit I guess). More motivated on adding prospects.

My point with Cobb, is many times we can fix bad pitchers. What we cant do is fix bad hitters. So trade an unfixable product (for SD) in Myers, for a possible fixable product in Cobb. Of course this trade more sense when Cobbs obligations was larger.

Which is why when I try and think of places that Myers can be shipped out to, it always starts with bad pitching contracts. As that is our best chance of making better of a bad situation.

We need Myers. I know people like to think we are overflowing with outfield talent but in reality we are very short. Myers is hitting well right now. He has been on offensive force for us in the past, thus his big contract. When he is on he has power, speed and plus defense in an OF corner. He and Renfroe are the only guys on our 40 man roster who have proven that they can be quality starting OF's at the major league level. We can't get rid of him, we have nobody to replace him with.

There’s only one way to trade Myers and that’s to eat 80% of his contract.....ain’t gonna happen.

Unless we trade him to the Rockies.....he would be an All Star again playing 81 in Coors.

I went back and thought of some of the LHH OF (capable of playing OF) I’ve read and heard linked to the Padres at different points in AJP’s tenure; Jay Bruce, Nomar Mazara,Jurickson Profar, Eric Thames, Jon Jay, Trent Grisham, Adam Eaton.  Mazara’s potential interest me, but he’s another big man in spacious Petco. Grisham looks good, not sure brewers are interested in moving him. Eaton solid OBP guy. Bruce wouldn’t cost much in young talent and Philly would need to eat significant dough. Thames is intriguing, but I would imagine his defense in the outfield would be poor at best.
