LA v SD - 2021 Version
Quote from BoosterSD on December 30, 2020, 12:45 pmQuote from Ben Davey on December 30, 2020, 10:53 amWhat has Hos done? If you assume there is a DH next year where does Hos bat? 6th? 7th? I am just not a big Hosmer fan.
Rookie of the Year, 4 Gold Gloves, All Star, Silver Slugger, and a World Series Champion! Not to mention that Hosmer has 4,000 more ABs than Muncy has and .40 points better than Muncy for their careers. Muncy is more of a slugger though. Although Hosmer killed Muncy in almost every hitting category in 2020.
Yes, Hosmer was trash for the 1st two years in SD, and yes we did overpay for him. I still think he is glue of the team. Tatis is the heart, Machado was finally the muscle, but I think that Hosmer makes everyone gel, and thats what they brought him into SD, IMO. Helps to have a good team around you.

Quote from fenn68 on December 30, 2020, 1:10 pmLux vs. Cronenworth is a tough one. Sort of a question of “when”.
Lux has the better long term projection still in my mind ... just don’t know when (if) that kicks in ... no indication that will be in 2021.
Cronenworth has the production in 2020 with a great July/August and a weak September .. plus older. Which is the real Cronenworth.
2021 could g0 either way on both ... in 2020 Cronenworth’s body of work was better so would have to bet on Cronenworth out of the blocks. Long run ... Lux but he still has to show ML bat (only 23).

Quote from fenn68 on December 30, 2020, 1:17 pmMuncy has to think he is very fortunate to fall into the lap of the LAD ... surrounded by a lot of talent keeping the focus off him and used to max in skills.
Remember in his two years limited use in OAK he was terrible to the point where OAK just released him from the minors. LAD signed him to a minor league deal ... had him in the minors in 2017. Then around age 27, landed on a strong LAD team and was lights out in 2018-19 as he move around the diamond. No so much in 2020.
Horses for courses ... Muncy may be that guy that is great on a great team and a dud on a mediocre team.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 30, 2020, 1:35 pmQuote from Ben Davey on December 30, 2020, 10:53 amMuncy had a horrendous 2020 season, but was one of the bigger reasons the Dodgers won the WS (I HATED watching his AB as he worked very count full and did really well to tire out the pitcher.) He was also an all star in 2019, and received MVP votes in both 2018 and 2019.... What has Hos done? If you assume there is a DH next year where does Hos bat? 6th? 7th? As someone who has seen Lux play throughout the minors, I was never surprised by his lofty prospect ranking. He is every bit as good as his ranking. Of course as a Padre fan I hope he doesnt. There was an issue this past season with him not hustling but if you offered Preller Lux for Cro he would say yes before you even finished "nenworth"
Kershaw spent most of the year injured, but was healthy for the playoffs. If Kershaw or Walker are injured going into the 2020 post season, I dont think they win the WS.
I also think, to Fenn's point that winning the NL West becomes even more important if the playoffs go back to the 1 game WC playoff. Our team is now built for the playoffs, but in a one game playoff could the Padres go against Castillo and the Reds and get shut down? (Could you also see a Castillo, Bauer, or Syndeguard shutting down he Dodgers and knocking them out in a one game playoff? Completely)
The difference now is we have three #1 starters and could also shut down our opponent in a 1 game series.
In a 1 game series they could all pitch!
Even with an injury...that’s why adding “two” was so important.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 30, 2020, 1:38 pmThe thing about Hosmer is that now he only has to be a complimentary piece.
I realize he’s paid like more....but with “this” lineup he’s just fine hitting 6th or 7th.
Two years ago we needed him driving in runs and hitting in the middle of the order.
This may have something to do with his improvement....same with Wil.
Neither has the pressure to be the main offensive force.

Quote from 3fingersplit on December 30, 2020, 2:00 pmGeez...to read all of this about the roster it's amazing to me the Padres even made the playoffs....Hosmer Sucks, Cronenworth had a bad month and is to old so he might make the team as a platoon player only, Meyers has to go because he is Meyers, Nola is SoSo as a catcher so we need Mejia back, Pham is the greatest player in Padre history and Paddack should be in the minors or traded, Yates only if he is cheap enough and on and on
Well you all have convinced me this team was a fluke last year......so much for buying season tickets again....I will find something else to waste my money on

That is the advantage of “long line-ups” that keep pressure on the opponents and pitchers can’t easily pick and choose who they pitch (or not pitch) to. Just makes good player better. Sort of my theme on Muncy (and probably Taylor) in LA ... good players but playing over their base level if on a “normal” normal teams.
So, maybe we see Hosmer and Myers (and others) just delivering more with Tatis, Machado, Pham in the line-up ... and that then reverses and set-up up Tatis, Machado, and Pham to get better ABs.
Nola/Caratini - Hosmer - Cronenworth/Kim - Tatis - Machado - Pham - Grisham - Myers should give a strong offensive line up 1-8 and even if a DH is added they should have one of the longest effective batting orders in the NL.

And assuming no DH as it currently stands

Quote from fenn68 on December 30, 2020, 4:35 pmvs. RHP:
- Grisham (L)
- Tatis
- Machado
- Hosmer (L)
- Pham
- Myers
- Cronenworth (L)
- Nola (unless Darvish is starting ... then Caratini)
vs. LHP
- Kim
- Tatis
- Machado
- Hosmer (L)
- Pham
- Myers
- Grisham (L)
- Nola (unless Darvish starting ... then Caratini)
Trying to keep the LHH separated by two RHH so difficult for LHRP given the 3 hitter rule.
